i've got a client getting nervous about the use of a non-public domain font (from House Ind.) in a logo..
fonts are so prevalant in logos these days.. i don't get it: how many times do you see a logo set in ITC Avant Garde, yet its not a public font.
does anyone actually adhere to only using public fonts in logos? if not what is the best workaround (other than outlining and modifying the font).. ???

swollen huh wha?
sorry i don't know how my question could be more clear... ?
do you use foundry fonts in logos, and if so, do you get written permission to do so?
legally speaking purchasing a font license does not give you permission to use the font in a logo.

I would take the non-public fonts into Illustrator design your logo but change it, if you know what I mean.
If you use the House fonts purely as they are then it's traceable but not if you render it uniquely.
Or am I off the mark here?

I think i agree with shotoshi... of course, I have never heard of anyone going after a company that has used a certain font in their logo. Just tweak the bitch and call it your own. Just like Microsoft did with Arial, rather than "buying" Helvetica.

nice one Flickster - cheeky but then Microsoft didn't get where they are today by playing by the rules.

Every foundry's EULA (End User License Agreement) is different. House's is probably more strict about such things, whereas other foundries are not. Unfortunately, you gotta read the EULA for the foundry involved.

i would have thought that once the thing is outlined it's no longer a font, therefore not a concern.
the copyright of fonts is for the name, mainly, and the included leading and kerning tables maybe. this is why you see nasty knockoffs in clipart sets called - futurica and tomes (rather than futura andd times obviously).
if you wanted to you could download a pdf or jpeg example of the font from the foundry showcase and trace the letters you want for a logo. you'd never actually use the font itself and therefore it's not ever an issue.
companies can't copyright letterforms as the alphabet is kinda public domain.

houseind stipulates you can't use their fonts for a logo although you have bought a license? really? whoah. that's fucked up. first time i heard this btw.
