You cannot go wrong with firearms and liquor. Last xmas bought my dad a bottle of jagermeister (he never had it and is not a big drinker) and a high powered air rifle and we had a ball shooting things in the back yard. Mom didn't think it was too funny, but it beat the hell out of sitting around trying to find stuff to talk about...

nice bird feeder: if they are into it
fleece zip up jacket for the mrs.: they love that shit. specially the older they get... they are always cold.
bottle of wine: again, if they are into it. but if they are you can't just buy some $5 osco bottle. sonoma valley 2002 is actually rated #1 in taste as it was a good year in cali. they will be impressed you know this.
a coffee table book: buy one of something they are interested in. must have a coffee table though.

i'm sending my parents for 5 days to a villa in cozumel, mexico...yeah baby!
after years of cheesy gifts, i had to go all out.
if they like books, a nice 1st edition or something special. if they like wine, same concept.
and so forth.
