Here is an excellent solution that works VERY well. The Alpine deck connects to the iPod and provides power. You can navigate the iPod on the screen of the deck. Photos...

isnt the connector like $100 ?

I believe the deck was $650 CAD. The shop that sold the deck had iPod capatible decks starting at $350 CAD.

The pictured deck was $750 CAD.

I use a 1/8" to 1/8" cord to plug it into the aux input in the front of a cheap KOSS stereo. I'm amazed more stereo's don't have aux inputs in the front.

I have an AUX in that I can plug my ipod right into - but it's annoying I can't control it using the stereo....

What's wrong with iTrip?
- nosaj0
True enough... It takes about 5 seconds too long to change albums at a red light. Which is not only frustrating but dangerous...

iTrip sucks at best......
Always staticy and very unpredictable
its ok for audio based stuff like a live comedy show
but for music its the worst
- jox0
ok. what about the thing you stick in the tape unit? er.. what's it called, iThing.. uh.
I've actually not purchased an iPod just becuase it doesn't connect very well with car stereos. Like piss am I having cables all over the place. I got enough already.

Ramanisky hits it on the nose. iTrip sucks my ass. If you don't live in Bum Fucked Egypt and have more than three radio stations around, it's impossible for it to work. I returned my iTrip the day after I got back from the roadtrip I bought the piece of shit for. I hate it.
Thanks for listening.

fm modulation and tape converters all sound like POOP.

Nosaj... I hear what you're sayng about it taking a few dangerous seconds too long to be switching songs on the move.
I am getting a cheaper ipod friendly deck installed at Atlantic Car Stereo on Main Street in the next few weeks. I'll let you know the results.

almost all aiwa decks have a front input. i realize it's aiwa, but it actually is pretty nice. you can get 'em starting out at like $99

i concur that itrip is horrible...especially for long roadtrips where you are going in and out of cities and the frequencies are always changing...i am presently using a tape converter and i don't think it's bad at all.

i just bought an AIWA stereo that was $99 with free installation at circuit city - my girl can plug her ipod mini(pink) right into the front and listen.
easy.

Have you guys seen this

I was considering it, but it does cost too much.
bedenken, how much is the connector? $100 US? And does it plug into the CD Changer Socket? Where did you get the connector too?
I'm keen on doing the same thing in my Golf 2004 but not replacing my stock head unit. I want to connect it through the CD changer.

I got this for my factory honda radio/cd/changer, because I don't like the way 3rd party cd players look in the dash:

There's apparently a DIY kit for the cheapos... I had the URL but can't find it... anyone know anything like it?
