what do you think? I'm about to hit the buy button. does this seem like a peach of a deal or what?

No.

why not? It seems like its in great shape...plus I just test drove it and it drove very well. But I'm a girl so I know little about cars. :)

That 4-cyl engine is by far VW's most mass-produced engine ever, so as far as break-down is concerned, it's not too big of a deal.
However the technology and the car itself is very small, and from the early 70s (even though it says 92). It's not something i would buy my wife if you know what I mean. It's deadly on impact...
And also, where do you live? Some place cold? Rust tends to eat those in and out - bring a magnet and a hammer if you're going to check it out.
Good luck :) What ever happened to the Bertone?
- monkeyshine0
thanks, jox. magnet and hammer? I gave it a pretty thorough, if uneducated look over. Saw no rust, body is straight. engine looks very clean. the guy has put alot of work into it already...drove like a gem. only irritation was a slight whistling from the front of the soft top...but it was pouring the rain and I no leaks. hhmm.
I live in Nashville...it would really just be an around-town car. The Bertone was great but the rear left was crunched in and I realized that given how rare those cars are it would cost a ton to repair. :(

The hammer for the suspension/shocks, it should be able to take a pretty firm beating if its healthy. The magnet is to check for rust in weird places - it doesn't stick where there's rust and the rust you "don't" see is what can kill it.
Looks like it's a little bleached in the front from sun exposure? Happens to all red cars :(

120,000 miles is kinda scary

for $1500 maybe.. just know everytime something goes wrong with it its going to be at least $300 to repair...
- monkeyshine0
thanks guys. I can always count on you to tell me what I don't want to hear. ;) The resale value, by the way, is in this range and a bit higher. Hhmm. Haven't let it go yet. I'd look so cute in it. :)

It's a cool car.
If you're considering it seriously... pay for a mechanic to inspect it... and make sure it's a mechanic who works on VWs... shouldn't cost more than $75.
Since it's an automatic, I'd be more concerned about the transmission than the engine at 120K milles... try to get a sense from the mechanic of the state of the engine/transmission.. and what it might cost to deal with likely problems.

i wouldnt be that concerned with the mileage, i have an '80 BMW and the odo was stuck on 188k, ran like a dream.
it's a tiny car that'll die if it you get in a wreck, you feel safe in that? going 70-80?
you could get a better car for your money (seems a little steep), but it seems like youre in love with this one.

I bought it. :) I could be outta my mind but the mechanic gave a thumbs up so I let my silly side get the better of me.
Dutch, I'm in the stronghold of the american south. One good thing: It will be easier to flip off those stupid SUV driving, fake boob repubs in a convertible. :)
- monkeyshine0
and why would this car be any more dangerous than a miata or a mini?
- jox0
Congrats! It's a very cute car!
It is, however much more dangerous than a miata or such - the construction is over 20 years older and its smaller. Doesn't necessarily mean anything though.
- monkeyshine0
hey jox, thanks. Thanks for your input too. smaller than a miata??? nuh uh. :)
- jox0
Impact zones are :P
- DutchBoy0
you just have to be a bit more careful at intersections, to avoid being run over by one of those stupid SUVs.
Have fun with it, monkey!!
