just wondering how people handle the ownership of fonts when they hand over an ID/ logo package that includes type set in a specific font.

in other words, if the designer previously purchased the font used in the ID package, should the client then also be responsible to purchase their own copy to apply to their own in-house material... ethically speaking of course.

    ?

Ethically speaking, yes, but it hardly ever works that way.

You could get around the issue by including the cost of the extra font in the job, i.e. if you are going to turn over material for thier in-house use, you purchase a duplicate font (another license) for them. That way you get the font, and so does the client, the founderies get thier money, everyone is giddy...

Dont pay for anything if you can get away with it.

I know this suck for the font guys but hey I have made fonts, and hey I have made music and short films too but if someone finds the things I have made out there then use them. I am not going to cry.

You have business to take care with fonts just tracking down who you have to pay is a bigger deal than it is worth.

but I worked for a company that once got in trouble for all this. what they ended up doing is buying the whole adobe set, throwing everything else and anytime a client gave new things they went in a specail folder for a short period of time but we couldn't use them in our things.
this way sucks, because it is limiting, expensive, and a huge hassle.

yeah i was just trying to be mr. niceguy and give my client a copy of the font.. normally i would, and i know that's not the "correct" thing to..

but for this specific job the client is larger than what i would normally be dealing with, so i guess i'm just getting a feel for what i can get away with.

the client should purchase a license as well

    end of story IMHO
