so I'm going to work some jobs on a freelance basis with a graphic design studio...however I got a lead on a really big account last weekend and they are one of the design studios clients.
A friend of mine is a good friend to the client and has been trying to get me this account unbeknownst (sp?) to me for a couple weeks. When we were out this weekend we ran into the client and my friend introduced me...I knew at the time that this account was being worked on by said design studio and when I asked the client about that he said, 'yeah well they aren't under contract so we can get rid of them whenever we want to', from what I understand they aren't too happy with their work.
But now I'm supposed to go work for the studio ... wtf do I do if that account comes in? btw the clients account is really nice...90% of us would shoot our mothers to have them on the resume...the peices that would come out of it could stay in the portfolio for decades.
thoughts?

reject the offer from the design studio and go with the client if they'll sign you with a contract.

tell the client you will be working for said studio and have them request you be put in charge of their projects.
the client get's the designer they want, the studio keeps the account, you get points with the studio for helping them keep the account, and you get to do the work you want.

True only I'd like to have this account for my own since I don't really trust the studio. And the studio has had this account for a really long time, so I doubt they would let me head the account. I think the answer would be to get out of working for the studio, its more honest. They are going to hate me if I land that account anyways and they will try and have me knocked off if I land the account while I'm doing work for them.
There is no way in hell I could turn it down if the client asks me to work on their stuff.

Two things to look at.
Number 1 - If you took the client, the design studio would know, and never ask you to do work again. So would the client be able to provide you with enough work to keep you going, or would they be gone in 3-4 months?
Number 2 - If you go to the design studio, you'll have that client's work on your portfolio anyway, and you'll most likely have other work with them as time goes on.
I always look at longevity, keeping the money coming and consistent.

true very good points
Yeah they would know, this town is not very large, I'm prepared for that. But I also have a lot of other work...I'm pretty much helping out at the studio to do some web work, where the work I would be doing for said client would be print based...so I wouldn't get to touch it anyways. Just having some quality peices from this client would bring in more work so I'm not too concerned with the longevity of it. I think I might just end it with the studio, I'll give it a couple weeks and get out...even if I never get the client. I'll make up an excuse that would give me an in with them down the road if the conflict of interest resolves itself.
I'm a really honest person and I don't want to burn bridges. If I get this account while working for them...oh that would make me feel like shit, and like I said this town is not HUGE.
