Meta Tag Limit?

Is there a true limit to the amount of characters you can use for meta tags? Ive heard 1024 or 900 characters for keywords and 180 for description.
I had some guy tell my client if he exceeded 256 characters - search engines will ignore your site?
Oh and I serched the PVN.

Google ignores meta tags.

depends upon the search engine.
some read them all, some read none, some stop after x characters, etc.
the bigger point is to get your client to identify their target audience, take an educated guess at phrases they'd expect that audience would use, try it, wait 3-6 months, then see where they stand and either work with you or pay a designated search engine optimization company.
