what is best?
i need to recommend one for a friend who's a photographer and basically needs it only to preview and edit photographs on the spot and send them..
he wants something reliable. Mac only as he has a G4 already.
i have read so many complaints about powerbook problems (screen, overheat and what not)
and never heard ibook owners complain, and it's cheaper as well!!
this guy doesn't need superpower, just the most reliable Mac notebook that is out there..
tia,

i just got the ibook a month ago. love it. it's fast enough for everything i've done so far.
not sure about large file photos though but i've opened some big photoshop files ace.
i got the 1.15 ram and the thing smokes.

with osX ram is key, you can get away with a slower processor if you beef up the ram.

is the ibook strong/robust enough though?
he's a busy press-photographer, you see.
- k0na_an0k0
most def. the thing is built like a brick shithouse.
- DutchBoy0
and they are pretty robust yes.
unless you fart hammers ofcourse!
- k0na_an0k0
yes they do have a nice bust. a full c cup if i'm not mistaken.
- DutchBoy0
your hammers?
[does this thread need to derail already?]
btw. what are your specs, k0na?
- DutchBoy0
k0na?

i think i said this before, but imo the ibook is for girls, and the powerbook for men ;)
no serious, if you buy the ibook (it is much cheaper indeed for the same weight) be sure the RAM is 512+ to run OSX nice and smooth.
- k0na_an0k0
sorry. was away for a sec.
they are...
1.33GHz PowerPC G4
512K L2 cache @ 1.33GHz
14-inch TFT Display
1024x768 resolution
1.256GB DDR266 SDRAM
80GB Ultra ATA drive
SuperDrive
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
32MB DDR video memory
AirPort Extreme built-in
Bluetooth built-inExternal 160GB Lacie HD
It all smokes. The only thing that I've had to get used to is going from a G4 and 22 inch monitor running 1600x1200 to 1024x768... but I'm adjusting well.

i have an ibook, it's awesome. you definately need lots of ram though...

I got the same setup as k0na except a 12:er. Has been my travel companion for a few months now (the ibook - not k0na) and it rocks.
I'll probably be getting a 12" PB when they soup it up so I can run an external monitor (w/ a different resolution). I looked into the PB myself at first, but it's definitely not worth the extra cash since the iB's are upgraded now and the specs are about the same.

1 comment here..
The screen on the powerbooks is way brighter and truer in color.
that might be a big benafit for him since hes doing image work.
The ibook has a very dark screen compared to the powerbook.
That is my main complaint about the ibook.
both will work.. just beef up the RAM as much as possible.
I would say 15 inch powerbook
because of the screen.. it really does make a difference

I have a Powerbook G4. The only problem I have had was a little overheating...ok well enough to melt the keyboard(it was closed and in my bag). After i replaced the keyboard it ran fine for about a month and then the mobo went to shiat. When it came back from apple they said there was evidence of fire damage on the inside. All in all it is a nice machine just a little tempermental.
For your friend I think a high end ibook with alotta ram would be perfect
- Donvitoviti0
man you must have had a really bum powerbook.. never heard that happen before.
- k0na_an0k0
jox i'm gonna do the exact same thing. i'm keeping my 22" monitor so i can soon buy the pb to run it with a beefed up resolution.

i have a titanium G4 powerbook, for 3 full years now.
and every day it is my travel mate, so 10 times a week *donk *clunck in the thrunk of the car. i can tell you, it is damn shockproof.
i never ever had any problems with it. sometimes a freeze, but that always happens with IE5, duh.
it's still great.
and the 1024 resolution is enough for image editing and other design stuff i do.so it was worth the money so far

donvitovito,
"
The ibook has a very dark screen compared to the powerbook."can't you colormanage that somehow?
and he is a press photographer so not tooo picky on colorbalance like editorial/studio photographers.
and cheers everyone for the comments!!!!
i am thinking of recommending the ibook with lots and lots of RAM.

I go everywhere with my ibook... the thing is indestructable... It does everything for me: website, illustrations for print, design, whatevs. Much better deal for the loot you spend. I got rid of my tower cuz I never used it.
oh, I got a 1ghz G4, beefed up ram... I love the little bastard.

Make sure he gets built-in Bluetoof too! I made the mistake of *not* getting one with it, and I had to buy an external usb-stick-in ugly-ass adapter.
If he doesn't use it, just get it for second-hand value.
