kind of a stupid question, but is it possible to get a vinyl noise crackling sound or tape hiss sound when making music digitally? while it does sound off in concept, i really love the sound of stuff that have a low fi edge, and digital music does sound artificial at times. i think i should just export stuff to my four tracker and then refeed it into my comp? any other suggestions?
also i want to mimic the sound of when people change radio stations...whats the best technique for this?

i love the smell turntables make from the needle rubbing the vinyl... ah, the simple things in life

to get the vinyl crackle you need to start a big fire, then record the fire noise and tweak it using software until it sounds like record noise. duh.

there are plenty of samples out there with this type of sound. you could also record an actual record player and record the sound of that type of thing. line in any record player into your computer and use software.

nothin sounds as good as the real thing... especially when the real thing is a mono printing of Miles Davis "In a Silent Way"... ah the simple pleasures indeed :)

you can also run the sound through an analog filter post-production to warm it a bit and also add the distress to it. a few bands have done this over the last few years to enable them to record cheaply at home but give it the extra less-clinical depth before pressing.

if you want to be hardcore, get your music pressed on vinyl. then take different copies and distress and scratch them different amounts.. then play the records and record that back in and assemble a mix that sounds the way you want.

that sounds cool but not exactly cost feasible
