with all due respect, as i'm far too nice to want to upset *anyone*, i think the problem here is that mrleone is critting newstoday. i think if 'refresh', 'find' and 'broadcast' were labelled 'panty', 'dog fart' and 'sausage' and he said they were confusing, he'd still get crucified.
do i find them confusing? no, not really, but ya got to see where a brother is coming from, no?

I know you can 'find' the 'find' button, but seeing as it's something that users of the site seem to harp on about so much, do you not think that it should be clear enough that you 'see' it and intuitively understand what it means? Of course the buttons are legible. And now that you all know how to use the site you know which to press. I'm talking about predicting users' reactions. Currently it does not scream "this is a search button, if you click on me you will be taken to another page where you can type in something and search for it". Do you guys seriously not work this way? Do you just understand 'useable' to be the same as 'readable'?
Also, the proof is in the pudding. First time users obviously 'don't' make the assumption that there is a way of searching through previous 'broadcasts'. That's why you lot have to tell them!

I don't think it's a matter of people not knowing where or what the "find" button is so much as it rarely works as it's supposed to. 7/10 times I get a php error when searching for topics in the PVN or I get a gigantic list that has no apparent order to it...

I think people know what find means... but the search engine itself isn't as good as it could be... i.e if i put flash textbox it wouldn't find anything with those words either seperated or in the opposite order (correct me I'm wrong?)

A lot of the users posting FAQs aren't noobs, just lazy.
The real problem is the shitty results you get back from it when you search, sorry - 'find'.

i dunno, it says "search now" on the find dialog box screen. i don't think it's a big deal. it's more of a deterent to people who post mac vs. pc threads, cool t shirt q's, and what kind of stuff there is to do in new york. new people won't understand that this type of stuff has been posted billions of times. it's not a question of usability imo.

Blofeldt - 99% of the time you're correct. but 1% of the time - like during this thread - you get those same people calling a person an 'idiot' and 'stupid' because they believe that 'search' would be more user-friendly than 'find'. yeah, nice guys, sound arguments.

It's interesting that Jacob Neilesen has become the one name that personifies the demon fear of web 'designers'. I had someone in my office say something the other day about 'useability is so 1998'. Idiot.
If you like, ignore me. My point is just that people are put off by complicated systems, no matter how small the complications seem to the chap who's designed it. Some of you seem to think "they'll learn". They wont, they'll leave.

also, this site probably wasn't design for the layman. think about that for a while.
most here, i suspect, would manage 'find' the search button if it were called search, find, fetch or gimme. something a little out of the norm from what we see all day can be a bit 'refreshing'.

Would Submit or Send make any more sense than Broadcast? Just cos something is a standard doesn't make it right.

even never having met the man/woman, i don't doubt their success at creating usable sites. i just don't think this site needs to be usable in the way he/she's thinking of. we don't want every l337 h4x0r with an internet connection on here posting thier new 2A-inspired splash page when there are places like that already on the internets like deviantart
