- superbaka0
thanks..
it was 138 shots over 18 months. my team was comprised of artists from the matrix, lotr, and ILM. good peeps.
the process is under wraps from sony..i had to sneak out the few maya images as it is. :(
hopefully the spider-man 2.5 dvd coming out next year will have my how-to reel on it.

textures were originally acquired in NYC from real buildings, then i art directed them heavly to make them more versitile, and redesigend a lot of architecture for the same reason.
we had to also design an entire NY street layout, with cars, bus lanes, street furniture, etc. the database is massive!

beautiful.
As a 3dmodeller I always wondered how large was the 3D model of the city for Spiderman movies. Did it comprise most of downtown manhattan? And how accurate was the model itself?
thx.

amazing!!
must have taken up extreme renderpower as well! (with all those cars, reflections, radiosity and what not..)
really stunning.

oh, and since noone posts the link for later...here ya go:

was this rendered with MentalRay if it's not SonySecret(tm)?
- superbaka0
it was mostly rendered with Pixar's Renderman. because the size of the city stressed renderman so much, i worked a little with pixar to develop features in the new renderman version (r12).
however, this image is all mental ray :

and was used in combination with the renderman shaders.

that image is a matte painting of manhattan. the city spidey swings through in that shot is all cg until he reaches the flagpole. it was shot from the top of the metlife building and we painted a smog layer, then a blue sky. (i threw a fit about that nasty combination.)
sp2 was *all* cg, however, with no matte paintings used anywhere. i wanted to raise the bar quite a bit.. to create more interaction of spidey with the city.
