in the late 90s there was a book and site that came out called the cluetrain manifesto...and it changed business
well I am writing a design train manifesto.....
I am starting it with these...you may continue....will post the best 100 on my site for public consumption...
1) We will not lower our standards and prices because the "market demands it"
2) We will not let templates become the standard of design
3) Original means Original
4) We won't promise a client 100 hours of work and try to fit it into only 40.
5) When clients don't know we will tell them
6) When clients don't understand we will explain.
7) When clients can't see it, we won't design it for free.
8) We will get everything in writing.
9) We will charge for spec work.
10) Our ideas are worth something not just our PSD's.
11) If a client says there are kids out there working for $10 an hour, we will tell them to find one.
12) We will not allow the oversaturated design market to diminish the quality of our work by forcing us to work quicker.
13) When a client asks for an estimate on the spot we will tell them "we will get back to them"
14) It is never our fault!ok add please.......

- We will communicate a message not simply a style, that is our job.
- Our work will tell a story.
- We will work our asses off on pro bono clients if their cause is worthy.
- We will leave our egos and general design snobbery at the door to favor educating instead of alienating.

- we will never talk shit about our clients, we will always treat them with respect.
- we will kindly, not forcefully, educate our clients: we should explain why we made choices and specificate exactly why our work is priced that way.
- we will never charge ridiculous amounts "just because".
- experience and "a good name in the industry" is never a reason to claim you are always right; you will always have to question and challenge yourself on each new project.
- designers will always define their designs based on their analysis of the subject, and never be introspective in the current state of what is hot and what not. Always look beyond your small world of trendy magazines and books.
- designers should never define themselves as being a designer based on wearing the latest pair of haute sneakers and gadgets, and by being virtuous at GTA or skateboarding etc.
- Question EVERYTHING and EVERYONE ALWAYS. Even learn to question and critique your examples/tutors etc.
- do not overanalyze yourself and your work. If you have followed the process really well, then go with it, if your design has the desired effect that was demanded, be happy, regardless of what other designers tell you. (remember: this biz is full of knowall snobs!!)
- people make mistakes, so do designers. If your local pizzahut delivered a pizza with the wrong cheese on it you are not calling the cops. Be nice to your clients and apologize and correct your mistakes if possible, or else jsut move on. The world is full of different and fresh challenges.
- chin up, and never forget why you wanted to do what you do in the first place.
- take responsibility, dare to take an ethical point of view, if you think hamburgers are bad, do not design for McDonalds. Try to stick to your own values, and if they differ from the ones around you, so be it. It is your life, you make your own decisions, people will always respect you for it in the end.
- Always smile and have proper sex, it is inspiring. :)

• Designers will always use spell-check
- tomkat0
- if we can't design it, it still has to be to be invented.
does that make sense?
