I was asked to 'provide links to a discussion on those inconsistencies you mentioned?', those were quotes from a game development forum, not from me.
I fully support the 'it's just a tool' argument btw, it's just 3DS is really relying on it's installed base for market share rather than innovating atm if you know what I mean?
And seriously, colleagues in post production and 3D animation are asking almost exclusively fro Lightwave/Maya experience at the moment so for someone just starting out, I'd recommend the (free) Personal Learning Edition of Maya to give greater choice of work at a later stage.

Lightwave is terrible :P I don't know why people keep it as some kind of standard.

the lightwave GUI is pretty awful, and this is coming from someone with a Blender background.

I'm sorry toastie :( I went with this one dude and he completely fucked me over for the modeling bit, took a week of "I'm working on it" before he admitted he's only done low-poly shit. I was so pissed. But I posted on CGtalk and I got someone else that did it for pretty cheap and put up with my needs for perfection. The dude said he took 36 hours, and I believe him, and the pay wasn't that great, so there's your sour grapes, the work woulda sucked. I'll email you the renders though, they are looking sweet.

oh man, see what "The Man's" filters do?

tkmeister - I began using FormZ with version 2.8 or so. 2.95 was good, but 3, 3.5, 3.6, etc., were bad. Most of us kept using 2.95 for it's stabilitiy.
I started at the Univ. of Florida, in the architecture program and then used it at UCLA for my masters (in architecture).
It's a lot better now, with ver. 4. It's pretty stable and the modeling is very good, but I like Max better for the complex, smaller scale things. FormZ should have a GI renderer in the next version, which will be huge. If they get better animation and a good GI renderer, I would think about dropping Max altogether.
Not to mention, Final Render and VRay will have standalone versions very soon.
