I want to learn acoustic guitar and I want to start by mastering a few nice tunes, I was thinking 'warning signs' by coldplay, but I think without piano etc it will sound too minimal, then I thought 'man in a shed' - Nick Drake, but it's too damn hard.
Any suggestions for something with a soft learning curve?

Coldplay songs: I don't play cover songs, but came across many of their songs' tab quite a while back.
I think they use quite a few alternate tunings, and if you are not familiar with that (figure that you are not since you want to learn guitar) then you will be really lost. Probably best to start with stuff that is in a standard E tuning.Definatly don't go trying to learn Sonic Youth songs.

beck - anything from mutations or sea change

I would learn punk three chord tunes and Nirvana if I were you. They couldn't be anymore easier to play. Coldplay tunes are actually much more complex in their theory.

choose songs you like. that will keep you goin..

ditto to JazX.
Sea Changes songs would be hard in a way because so many are a combo of strumming/picking simultaneous type of stuff.

Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
Start on G with the "Plucky bit"
Then the verse is;
(C)So, so you think you can , (D/F#)tell, heaven from (Am) hell. Blue skie from (G) pain
Can you tell a green field (D/F#) From a cold steel rail (C) A smile from a veil (Am)
Do you think you can tell (G)And did they get you to trade (C) Your heros for ghostsD/F#)
Hot ashes for trees (Am)
Hot air for a cool breeze (G)
Cold comfort for change(D/F#)
And did you exchange (C)
A walk on part in the war (Am)
For a lead role in a cage (G)Same pattern for last verse

If you like Pink Floyd's version, you should hear the one done by The Catherine Wheel. It's on their album Like Cats & Dogs.
Amazing. One of the best voices ever.

sounds boring but "everybody hurts" by REM - good to learn as it gets you used to fingerpicking and descending basslines pretty early on and it's not hard to learn - I started with that and now I'm blasting out all sorts of nick drake tunes (they're still bloody hard tho!)

If your intention is to pick up chicks its not a good idea. Girls dont like crappy versions of Coldplay and Stairway to heaven.

sloppy thirds. that is disgusting.
ahem. i've been led to believe tiina is a girl.
opiate - great music taste!
some beatles tunes are good starters.

Nirvana's polly is a super easy song to play. one of the first songs i learned to play but still one of my favs.

try the blues.....best foundation for popular music.
