Just got a new iPod 20 GB. Hooked it up through Firewire, put all of my muzak on. Worked fine.
One week later. Hook it up through FW again. No dice. Doesn't show up on desktop or iTunes. And after a second or two, the screen freezes. No response until I unplug it from the FW cable. Tried the USB 2.0 cable. It seems to show up through that. But not FW.
Reset it. Restored it. Etc. Etc.
Checked it on other comps here with different cabe. Nothing. Seems to be a hardware issue with the iPod's FW.
Anyone run into this? I'm taking it to the local Apple store at lunch to have them look at it. But might have to send it off. Brought it online.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

Are you using a mac or PC?

Mac.
I found an thread on the topic and it sounds very similar to the problem I'm having. Except that he's on a PC.

i had the same deal happen to me when i got my first one (i'm on my 3rd now). i ended up being able to exchange it for a new one.

I think they'd exchange it at the apple store but it's engraved. So I guess the only way to to do that is to send it off.
Goodbye iPod for 3-4 weeks I'm sure.

heh.. after returning my first one, mine seems to work fine on my pc. been going for 2 years now about
maybe it's the drivers for the firewire card or something.. that's usually what separates the good hardware from the bad

did you restart the iPod? Hold down the play and menu buttons for 5 secs til it restarts
- Carty0
really it restarts? lol... yeah.. tried that a few hundred times.

I had the iPod connection cord go bad once. Make sure to try that before spending too much time and money. You can get a new one at Target.

It happened to my 2nd Generation 20 gigabyte Pod a couple of years ago. They gave me a new one. I didn't have to send it off. I was stilll under warranty, I think.

thanks all for the input. Took it to my local apple store at lunch. The guy there couldn't even get it into disk mode. he suggested going through apple.com's support. because it is personalized on the back, they can't swap it out for a brand new one.
now i have to have apple send me a box and allow 2-3 weeks for it to return.
what did we learn today?
skip the part where you can put silly nicknames or special messages on your ipod.
thanks,
