do you think 3D printers will be implemented anytime soon? and how would they work, like origami? anyhow i think this is a sector of design that should be explored immediately and made cheap for the common household. is it already implemented in the corporate world?

3d printing has been a alive for a few years now, I have seen cell phones designs on their first stages to test ergonomics and stuff like that.
The final "print" is etremely detailed and looks like some sort of light brown material maybe wax?
I have also seen it at work in some conference and its amazing to see it work, like you can stand in front of it saying wow a few times when its printing
:)

wtf???
link???
- radar0
don't they use them for cell development - to produce body parts?

never gets old

dudes!
that is sculpturing.. not printing!
silly geeks.

craziest thing i have ever seen. it can print out a working skateboard ball bearing with all miving parts. gotta be pretty 3d / cad savy to use it though. we were thinking of getting one for rapid prototypes for machine shops.
- Meeklo0
that one is even better, it has color too..
and makes bearings?

i was looking at the site. i am really confused...how the hell does it work. the demo they have is worthless.
so a printer make a physical 3-d model? how? what is it made of? is this too many questions?
thanks.

it's called 'stereolithography' and is widely available at all scales, and, generally, is very affordable.
- lvl_130
can you explain a bit more. if you got time maybe answer my questions above? thanks, i guess i'm just in the dark and trying to make some sense of this crazy stuff : )

"available at all scales, and, generally, is very affordable."
errrr....ya.
i just saw a pricetag on one of those sites. $24-fucking-thousand dollars!
cheap as hell!
as a matter of fact i will order 2 of them at once!

that's a good price for something that wasn't forseeable a decade ago...hmmm 10 years and i should have my own from best buy, can't wait! imagine emailing people puppets of yourself to scale. omg, think of the cybering connotations, lmao

erm, sure, if you want to buy the printer it is a large amount of money, however, if you want to do a 1-off of some shape you've been refinging in a 3d app, you can get it printed (less than a cubic foot) for less than a hundred bucks. there are lots of places that have them and lease their use. i can actually get then done at our local state college here for free.
as far as how they work, it basically passes a strip over a horizontal surface, leaving behind a thin single layer of sediment. additively, this builds the volume vertically.
...and as far as the scalability, they initially developed this for printing scale vehicles for wind tunnel testing. next, the tech was refined for precision; they can make casts for jewelry with this process now. lastly, a macro version was created that rides on a railway, and is used to build cement houses alongside the track.
as far as materials, it atarted out using salts, and now resin mixtures are used according to what the final application will be (cast/ prototype/ finished product.
there are even a few companies that are trying to capitalize on this process by setting up a buisness model where people have these prnters in their homes and they can order data from the web, which gets sent to the house and 'produced' on the spot.

nice. thanks chach. i was really confused. they sound amazing, but yeah, i won't be owning one anytime soon. yo dutch send me one of yours : )
