If you wanna do this kinda thing maybe set the image as a B/G and have a simple 1.2.3.4.etc...? I get 2 whacking big black bands down either side.

you know a simple image x of y. y being the total amount of images and x the image you're currently watching. either with txt or a graphic or whatever. so an image 5 of 10 would mean i'm halfway thru. knowing that there's an end will make people stick around longer in this case.

i don't think it's being bored, it's more being "annoyed". you sort of want to click thru but you don't know how long it'll take so you sort of quit. but dude, it's your site, do whatever you please to do. if you feel like it doesn't need it than don't do it.
do you have site stats? if so, just keep this setup and check the stats on how far people go. change the setup to you know what and check the stats later. chances are that you'll see that people will look at your pictures more. and that's what your site is for. looking at pictures, promoting yourself. right?

Well if you're going to keep the black box, at least move it somewhere more to the edge of the photos (maybe bottom right) because it's a bit distracting in some of your pics like....

Some kind of navigation would definitely be a good idea, and maybe make the photos a wee bit smaller for people browsing with a lower screen res.

well you could also code it differently. that the black box isn't fixed on the same position all the time (which could lead to disturbing the composition) and have it flexible in position.
and i agree with pascii's agreeing with me that the black box is something you should keep :)
