Yeh meet them half-way and see what you can get away with - you may be able to keep your fonts logo's, etc. Sometimes clients *think* they know what they want but when you present them with ideas they get excited.
Don't give up the fight - just keep at them and talk - ask them what it is they like about it, explain why you went the direction you did. Don't be afraid to be too outspoken. Be polite and sound excited and they will at the very least listen to your professional opinion.

Charge them more. If they were already liking your first design and then all of the sudden changed, bill them. But if you're still in the conceptual phase then I guess you've gotta swallow it and change direction.
