So I guess you wont have to settle for the tried and true five-finger severance, eh?
Anyway, good for you!

OK. So I know this not actually a thread about the show, but there isn't one so why not. Right? SPOILERS BELOW so whatever.
I binge-watched both seasons consecutively and thought the first season was AWESOME. But the second season answered few questions and raised so many more-- it feels like another "Lost" or "Dark" or "Yellow Jackets" where the writers start a mystery without knowing what's happening themselves.
Here are some of my main questions:
WHAT DOES LUMON DO? They have hundreds of locations. If the main characters' work is so unique, what are they doing in all the other locations?
How many severed employees are there globally?
Why is it always fucking winter if many months have passed since Season 1?
Why was there seemingly no news coverage or police investigations of any of the events of Season 1?
Why didn't Devon press charges against Harmony Cobel for defrauding her, pretending to be a lactation specialist??
Season 2 Episode 4 gave me major problems.
>> Why were there clones/doubles/twins? Why didn't the characters want to approach or investigate their clones?!!?>> Why did they take them out into the woods at all?? Why add a new book to their weird bible to tell a story that could have been in the original texts?
>> They could have done this entire episode not on "FURBO" whatever shit they made up.
Harmony Cobel *invented severance* ?! Why. What did Lumon do before severance, just sold ether to a town of culty addicts?? If she's a fucking genius brain scientist, why does she drive a VW Rabbit and live in boxy, subsidized housing?
Why a whole marching band to celebrate the Cold Harbor thing? If they were going to get rid of all the severed employees after that was done, why bother? Why keep a marching band around at all!? Makes no sense.
**I could go on!** But I won't. If anyone wants to indulge me on answering any of these questions as other posts, that might be better than notes. I hate it when shows just do arbitrary things to hook the audience and there are no answers or reasons. Feel like that's the direction this show went. There should be a term for it.. "getting Lost."

Oh yeah, why are the underground facilities so large when there's no one fucking working in them? Why make them so labyrinthine? Just put fucking locks on the doors for christ's sake.
Why do they need to be severed to do their jobs?
Why kidnap a privileged, educated lady to experiment on her instead of someone the world wouldn't miss? There's millions of people trafficked every day in the world, including by major companies.
Why is Mark S special? If it's his connection to his wife, then it could have been any couple for them to use.
Why (apart from the kidnapping) does it need to be so secret? That they are trying to sever someone *25 times* instead of like just once is not particularly incendiary...

Clearly I'm not done. I think a better version of the story would go like this:
Lumon invented severance to keep things secret. The government now uses it for the most highly classified operations-- including everything that's going on in the severed floor. What Mark S & co. are working on is actually *data encryption* based on the chaotic disruptions created when severance happens (making severance necessary for the work they're doing, and proprietary to Lumon). Data encryption obviously is extremely important for national security, and now we have unbreakable encryption that's as complicated as the human brain.
AT THE SAME TIME, Lumon is creating a true AI based on the human brain, which is why the severance floors nationally have different areas which are mysteriously connected to each other. Each center works like a cluster of neurons or the organs within the brain. Severing people from their outside lives creates more sterile conditions for their brains to work as parts of this greater whole.
The real AI they create becomes the company, becomes Lumon, and begins taking over the world through religious indoctrination, monopoly, and influence over the government and the world.
^That's the kind of direction I might have liked this show to go. Rather than "rich people want to forget about their pain and problems" la la la.
Send me your downvotes. I'm ready.

It could be seen as a plus that a show has prompted such a reaction. It's not like any of us would truly know the meaning of all these mysteries, which are partially designed to keep us watching the show.
Plus the show has a bit of the Twin Peaks quirkiness with both characters and story, that though entertaining implies that this whole reality may not be what it seems.
Obviously a lot of it is riffing on workplace culture, disciplinary or "team building" activities, workplace amenities — the seemingly ridiculous door factory Dylan job interview is based on the writer's real-life door factory job. It's all dark humor and satire most of us can relate to from our working lives, and that's part of the entertainment. What is good is that there are layers of things going on, which makes for intriguing television compared to the usual fare.
Time will tell if Severance fizzles spectacularly like Lost, but I think the entire severance technology hints that what we assume is reality may not be as real as it seems. The settings and technology are definitely from an alternate timeline or reality than our real lives; Everything feels like the seventies or eighties aesthetic with strange modern embellishments. Ending season 2 with a French New Wave shot homage just makes it all feel more retro than not as well.
Still, the entire show could end up with its own version of the end of Black Mirror's infamous San Junipero.
Stiller claims the writer has a complete explanation for everything already and isn't making it up as he goes. Again, we'll see...
Anyway, I've shared plenty of your questions and criticisms, but I'm not put off so much as I want to see how they deal with things, especially reaching popularity. I am both entertained by the dark humor and appreciate the production quality, which is enough for me to sustain disbelief until the show "jumps the shark" or blows our minds.
- I don't like to invest in a show without a payoff. Makes me feel duped.sarahfailin
- Nobody does, and it's common for series to run out of steam. Severance has two seasons left and it's done unless someone decides to try to run it forever.evilpeacock
- If it's not your jam invest your time elsewhere. There's lots of good or great TV these days.evilpeacock
- ^yeah. severance was supposed to be one of the great ones though. S1 = great. S2 = idk...sarahfailin
- Sit out S3 and evaluate word-of-mouth; If folks compare it to S2 in ways that sound good then give it another shot.evilpeacock
