Clearly I'm not done. I think a better version of the story would go like this:
Lumon invented severance to keep things secret. The government now uses it for the most highly classified operations-- including everything that's going on in the severed floor. What Mark S & co. are working on is actually *data encryption* based on the chaotic disruptions created when severance happens (making severance necessary for the work they're doing, and proprietary to Lumon). Data encryption obviously is extremely important for national security, and now we have unbreakable encryption that's as complicated as the human brain.
AT THE SAME TIME, Lumon is creating a true AI based on the human brain, which is why the severance floors nationally have different areas which are mysteriously connected to each other. Each center works like a cluster of neurons or the organs within the brain. Severing people from their outside lives creates more sterile conditions for their brains to work as parts of this greater whole.
The real AI they create becomes the company, becomes Lumon, and begins taking over the world through religious indoctrination, monopoly, and influence over the government and the world.
^That's the kind of direction I might have liked this show to go. Rather than "rich people want to forget about their pain and problems" la la la.
