is 11x17 [tabloid] golden?
- scarabin1
no, it's not. nm.

Is it 1:1.6 or whatever the fractal theory ratio is? (the ratio you see in plants, people, snowflakes etc etc)

the divine proportion

ribit, that would be the Fibonacci sequence of prime numbers.
- ribit0
The ratio is the one I'm referring to...the (roughly) 1:1.6 ratioo that appears in nature.
Where does the prime number thing come in?
- unfittoprint0
in the Fibonacci sequence the ratio between the prime number and the previous in the sequence begins to approach the golden ration the higher they are:

What I want to know is... why does nature choose these ratios... What makes the ratio intrinsically 'the natural/useful choice' for subdivisions and growth steps?

scarabin - read The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst

an interesting theory

_salisae_ speaks the truth, look to the Bringhurst bible.

wow... all this serious science will make our brains explode... we better take a break and go talk about iPods and politics for a while...

did someone say golden shower?
- grayhood0
my senior these was all about useing golden section ratios in print design. used it to make grids for layout, introduced color at the golden division in pagination, choose CMYK color values with section ratios. lots of fun.

did i just walk into the movie PI?
- scarabin0
no, you just walked into one of the greatest discoveries in mankind's philosophical, artistic, and mathmatical history.
- lvl_130
that being the movie PI?

So Fast Company writes this article saying the aesthetics of the Golden Ratio are complete bullshit. Discuss?

- what does nature know?monospaced
- Nature doesn't know anything. it's a mindless endless motion. Everything is constantly moving and changing at different scale.pango

^ Interesting, but the comments are also worth a read for counter perspective.
He didn't really go into the fact that the golden ratio occurs in nature, or the mathematical basis behind it.
Also just in general it's good to have some kind of system or methodology when figuring out proportions. I'm sure you could take a different path to the same goal, but golden ratio is well known and has been tried and tested over time.
