Hey...so there is a G5 in my office and it is having some major problems. When it starts it only gets to the "grey Apple screen" and doesn't go anywhere after that.
It won't boot ifrom a CD.
"fsck-f" doesn't work.
Everything has been unplugged and re-plugged.
Ram has been taken out and put back in.
Any suggestions? Anyone esle have this problem?
thanks.

call helpdesk?

No, there's a trick, I think it's something stupid like hold the power button for 5-30 seconds?
I can't remember exactly, but it happened to me once when I first got my G5.
Let me try to find it...

Try starting up while holding the Control key?
There are a few different forums about it here:

make sure just the keyboard and mouse is plugged in.
start up holding Apple-Option-P-R and let the machine chime about 3-4 times. release the keys, seee what happens. "It's called zapping the pram"

pram zapping? is that still there in osx?

i will loan you a hammer.

hey..do you think we can make those nifty fish tanks out of the G5s? I am going to try it...not even bothering to unplug anything...yep should be pretty sweet..zzzZZZZaaaaAAAppp!

did you try pushing the resetbutton next to the bios battery, if its still dead after doing that...
its fucked! back to the store mate...
had the same problem with one of the new iMacs
make sure you get a new machine cause apple push out machines everynow and then that have written 'trouble loves us' on the motherboard.

not to take over this thread, but i have a g4 that as soon as the grey screen starts up i get a broken folder.
just happened sunday. was working in 9.2 then went to the start disk and changed it to boot up on os x, when the puter restarted it got to the gray screen and bam, broken folder.
anyone have any ideas?
oh, and no disks avail other than nortons utilities as i have uh... free... software. sorry. may have an old 9 cd. not sure.
any ideas?

is it a broken folder with a question mark? if so your mac cant find your partition to start up from. not good.... i had to reformat my drive cos mine wouldnt start up from the boot disk
- puter0
the broken folder means it can not find the system folder to start the OS- hold down the option key when booting and it will look for the all available systems.
As far as the G5 is concerned- either your hard drive is wacky or there is a major machine problem... unplug any firewire or third party thingies- try the option key trick if all fails call Apple.

We had G5 DP 1.8 do that same thing. Bad RAM. Replace it with a different stick if you have one. Should do the trick.

Had a similar prob with my 12" Pb some time ago.
It was under OS x 10.2.8 and it started up, and after the grey screen the screen just staid blue.
SOmehow, the system was broken, as I could startup from an external fw drive and backup my date. After that I reinstalled the OS, and everything went fine.
