Well, anthropologically speaking it is Jaz, read some Desmond Morris :)
"The roots of our Soccer Tribe lie deep in our primeval past." ~Desmond Morris
"I loathed the game, and since I could see no pleasure or usefulness in it, it was very difficult for me to show courage at it. Football, it seemed to me, is not really played for the pleasure of kicking a ball about, but is a species of fighting." ~George Orwell, Such, Such Were the Joys

kona:
it was a drunk crowd and they were starting to riot
they were trying to bust into a mcdonalds, chucking trashcans at the doors. they rolled an suv with ny plates and set it on fire.
they set trashcans on fire.
they were getting ready to do some serious damage.
the cops HAD to do something, and they only came out when they HAD to. maybe i'm getting old but i don't want my city turned into a fucking frat house by a bunch of drunk out-of-state shitheads.

Her name was Victoria Snelgrove.
Respect.

greedo:
"However, video from the scene where Snelgrove was struck showed the crowd in a joyous mood, slapping high fives and chanting celebratory Red Sox slogans. There were no signs of near-riotous conditions in that immediate vicinity although the area was crowded, and dozens of people near her stopped celebrating when they realized the severity of her injury and they tried to get help."from cnn.

Kuz. We're talking about a celebration here. She didn't deserve to die in a celebration. Saying that sport is death and that type mumbo-jumbo is BS.
Please spare me and keep your football hooliganism ideals to yourself.

no disrespect to the chick who died or anything... it's all tragic and all that...
just saying that it's not surprising that this kinda shit happens in sport. Cos Sport is like war by another name. And this game wasn't just about "may the best team win" it was about tribal rivalries that goes back almost a hundred years and the curse of the bambino and selling Babe Ruth etc... This is a deep seated tribal psychosis that is just like two countries that hate each other going to war, u know primeval tribal shit.
Otherwise everyone would sit back and just admire the skills of both team and go "yes, lovely form.. well hit old chap". But it's not, it;s about victory and defeat. It is another way of fighting and defeating ur enemy, only in a non-violent way. And both teams are expected to show as much agression and animosity for each other as two monkey gangs fighting over terrirotry and tearing each other up. It's our repitilian brains see. We need the tribes. That's why Sports teams represent Cities and Countries. Otherwise they wouldn't be called Boston Red Sox, they'd take the name of the corporation that actually own them. But then that wouldn't engender tribal loyalty. The primeval type.
So u see Jaz when these people riot, it is inherent in the way they identify themselves as belonging to the Boston tribe and their bitter hatred of the Yankees. What happens to some people is that they see the "violence" enacted by their tribe upon the other tribe (on the baseball field) and they get caught up with the agressive joy of defeating ur enemy - but feel gilty that they were'nt part of that victory (or "symbolic" violence". That they were just witnesses. Makes them feel left out of the tribe. So to join in with the tribe, they use the reptilian hardwired behaviour in their brain and start rioting off the pitch in the name of their tribe and unleah the pent up agression. This is inherent in the nature of sport.
Of course some people just like to tear shit up. Me, i never got into that tribal shit. I always think the best team should win and i like admiring the athletes skills on the pitch... Unless Man U are playing ofcourse - in which case I hope they get destroyed the fuckin scum ;)

sorry jaz, it's not idealism. I was talking about the riots in general not her death. I think that was what a lot of people were talking about. The riots goin on there...

haha kona, i don't cry about innocent deaths in Iraq, but the system of war
Pogue Colonel : Marine, what is that button on your body armor?
Private Joker : A peace symbol, sir.
Pogue Colonel : Where'd you get it?
Private Joker : I don't remember, sir.
Pogue Colonel : What is that you've got written on your helmet?
Private Joker : "Born to Kill", sir.
Pogue Colonel : You write "Born to Kill" on your helmet and you wear a peace button. What's that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke?
Private Joker : No, sir.
Pogue Colonel : You'd better get your head and your ass wired together, or I will take a giant shit on you.
Private Joker : Yes, sir.
Pogue Colonel : Now answer my question or you'll be standing tall before the man.
Private Joker : I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir.
Pogue Colonel : The what?
Private Joker : The duality of man. The Jungian thing, sir.

don't give cops a hard time just because thye pull you over twice in the fog...
I'm sure they were aiming for her eye too! Are you people stupid?
It was a terrrible accident. People were out of control. Chalk it up to "mob mentality" if you will but something had to be done...
you hypocrits that are against graffiti but not against a "celebration" where property damaged...give me a break
No one, even the crowd meant for someone to get hurt or killed...IT WAS AN ACCIDENT
- ********0
I'm sure not all the facts are in on the case.
- BonSeff0
ive never understood taking to the streets to celebrate and riot.
"fans" feel the need to destroy shit that have never actually payed to see a game. but are all the sudden die hard and rioting.
- speed_d0
don't forget intoxicated Bonseff...
myself, I'm a happy drunk
- k0na_an0k0
kuz. i will definately not cry over the innocent deaths in iraq. at least not the ones you're thinking of.
and speed, yes it was an accident, but i want to know how and why the cop shot it at her face. did he shoot it up in the air and oh shit at that perticular second she happened to be looking up? or was it shot at her from close range into the crowd like a fucking jagoff?
and i'm not mad at the two cops for pulling me over. i would be mad at them if they both gave me tickets. they were doing their job but it just added fuel to the fire of a really shitty day. don't get me wrong. i think MOST cops are great. my sister, brother in law, and 4 of my good friends are all cops. but there are some bad apples out there who were beaten up by the jocks or whatever during high school, never had a date, now they gotta badge to hide behind and they're total assholes. you can't tell me you don't know exactly what i'm tlaking about.
and like i said from the story i posted, there was no indication in her vicinity that the crowd was doing anything but cheering and giving high fives, so why was it shot there? who knows. if it was shot somewhere else yeah there could be a different name in the paper of who it happened to, but, maybe not.
