Hi All
I have come to the conclusion that being a designer is hard. Most job applications in the UK are asking so much from the designer it’s un-true.
Example: must know Macromedia, Adobe, CSS, W3 standards, php, asp, SQL, 8 years experience etc.
It now jack of all trades masters of NON!
is this standard?

it depends.
you cant generalize..
there are greedy bosses who see the designer as a tool and you must know everything but on the other side there are bosses who know the designer first job is coming up with creative visual work..but those are,i admit, not easy to find

I've found in Toronto, that most companies know the destintion between a designer and a programer. Havnt come across too many positions where they try to have you do everything.
I my position I guess I do more than just design , but it doesnt go beyond knowing intermediate actionscript and knowing html/css.

If you want to make solid money then yes you have to know that. Someone argued with me a few years ago that this will never happen and unfortunately I was right. Today the role of designer is much much more. If you want to make solid money (nothing that will make you drive a new BMW, but solid money), but then again you will be much better off working for yourself if you have those necessary skills.

Your list didnt include anything about creative skills (or being a design graduate)... I think too many people generalize in this field, when they should be defining designer/developer/programmer/te... roles more precissely (even if these do overlap a lot).
We're a client (with a very small budget), and we are looking for designers who understand web standards, usability, CSS stuff etc, and we're looking for programmers who can also format a page nicely without everything having to be defined for them... But we dont expect to find the full range of 'look and feel' creative design through to PHP/MySQL programming and server admin in one person. We can't afford such amazing talented people, if they do exist, and believe we are better to break these areas down and employ a few people part time instead (it's also safer in terms of not commiting ourselves to a single, untried, employee).

Is head exploding good or bad?
And if you happen to know anyone who can do everything from award-winning look-and-feel design thru to PHP/MySQL and CMS development to server admin (that we can afford), preferably in London, please send contact details...

Have I transgressed an unwritten law? Please help us reform our bad ways.

sorry I can't hear you, my head exploded. I like teh part about 8 years experience, since everything changes every year I have experience with stuff that's no longer relevant meaning I'll never hit the time limit since it resets constantly.
