Never post anymore, just needed to rant.
I teach at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. And today, in a 15 min gap some little shit (I’m assuming he or she is little) breezed into the faculty office and took off with my 12 inch Powerbook. This ever happen to anyone? What can be done about it?

no security cameras at the school?

I don't know what can be done, but I extend my sympathies. Lose much data as well?
In my school it's sort of an unofficial policy to never leave a classroom empty, especially when there are laptops about. The class moron decided to take off one afternoon lab time when he was the only one around, leaving a couple computers unguarded. I'm happy to say mine was still there when I got back, but I wanted to kick him in the nut.

hang up some pamflets saying:
G4 POWERBOOK THEFT
i know who you are.
i got you on camera.
i dont like the police.
bring it back while you're still able to walk and remember your own name.warm regards,

thats my worst nightmare..
you are a teacher so i think you are insured by the school..
still so ennoying you know one of your students stole you machine...and you are actually trying to learn those kids something...

i like dave's idea... scare the shit out of the lil fuck.
he prolly sold it already too so he'll be even more scared.

Yeah love the warm regards idea. I hope there is something the school can do, it seems that there should be... legaly?
- 2cent0
have you looked into whether its covered under the school insurance?
i would think this happens often.
- lvl_130
I agree with 2cent. the school insurance policy for this genereal sort of thing should be covered. although, assuming it was your own (that you paid for, and not paid for by the school) you may have to provide reciepts and such for proof.
still annoying though.

in the university where I teach, during a lunch break
they stole a videoprojector that was hanging from the roof of the room once...since then i go to pee with my laptop
- iDp0
that will teach you a lesson...no don't guard over your laptop 24/7. Spring for a 17 incher next time. People will notice that little shit walking around with something that has some extra size to it.

If only you'd disguised it as a pizza... http://www.humanbeans.net/powerp…
Bit late now that it's gone but you can install software that sends you an email each time the PB connects to the internet...

This Is Crazy, I talked to a school exec, they said the deductable for anything like this would be $ 10,000 !?!?!? WTF? And thus not worth it. I hope they can find it in their heart to work something out for me...

I had my 15" TiBook stolen out of my car the first week I got it during lunch...they broke into the car to steal my stereo and grabbed the backpack under my seat. I had waited months for the thing to arrive because I ordered the day the original TiBooks were announced. Spent about 4 grand on the thing, and then some shithead stole it from me days later.
The only thing you can do is contact apple and tell them the serial number so if someone brings it in for repair or anything it is red flagged.
You should run some kind of phone home application that tries to email you whenever it gets connected to the internet with the ip its coming from.
chances are, if you still know your mac address, and if the person connects at your school, you can find them.

Maybe you should reward the return of your laptop with amnesty for the theif, put on an APB to all the students etc.
Make a lot of noise. It's will turn up. Somebody knows something.
