anyone use it? is it worth it?
or does anyone have something better to back up my mac stuff
- ribit0
Its a bit expensive, but I use it (alongside with other services) because of the good integration of iDisk, Backup, and a good IMAP mail service, with Webmail (now suports throw-away aliases too.
You can buy 1GB of space now and split it up anytime any way you like between mail storage and iDisk.
But for backing up a lot of stuff, you are better with a big Firewire disk and a copy of Retrospect. I'm backing up to 4 disks and a NAS server in two locations, and cc'ing normal and system-generated email to 3 different IMAP mail accounts, but then we're a bit paranoid about not losing stuff...

oh and theres the easy to use homepage thing for making quick (password protected) photo galleries with slide show function..
and Virex included...
quite a lot of stuff really...

If all you want to do is store stuff, you'd be better off - just like ribit said - with an external HD or even a DVD-RW. (thats what I got)
It'll be paid off pretty quickly in comparison with what the account costs. Plus, it has second-hand value and nothing beats Gmail anyways so the email sure ain't worth it.

oh and there's iSync to keep multiple Macs and phones addresses and bookmarks and browser prefs and stuff all synched up....
we could be here all day...

Gmail doesnt do IMAP, so its of limited use...
I'd recommend backing up both locally and some stuff online... You never know when you are going to have a break-in, or a fire, or meteor strike...

is there anything you'd suggest for me to backup my mac to a single file or something? then i can copy it across to my file server
- ribit0
You're better to use Retropects 'backup to server' function to do incremental backups of selected stuff...
Or backup to a file using retrospect, then copy the backup file to the other server daily or whatever.
That way you can use Retrospect's filters to select by folder or creation date or naming rules or whatever...

my file server is just a pc upstairs
but i do have 2gigs of webspace...can i backup to that?
- ribit0
You could either use the 'Backup to server' option in your backup software, or once you have the file saved locally, just use an FTP program that allows you to setup a daily scheduled upload (whether targeting a particular file, or mirroring an entire local directory to a remote directory on the server, uploading only new/changed files)

It's all done locally btw... You can setup scheduled mirroring/download or upload all within your FTP program on your computer...You dont need to do anything on the server.
I'm using Transmit (best interface) and Interarchy (more advanced features like droplets for mirror-synch bookmarking)
