"but in case of energy, if we run out of conventional energy and have by then no sources for unconventional energy we *all* are fucked and it won't be an acceptable loss."
this is true.
i have seen a very interesting documentary about this online (it's mainly Dutch, i can look up the url if you wish..(email me)) on this subject.we are far from running out of oil, but the demand for oil is growing so fast that scientists expect we will have serious troubles in the near future if we don't find and USE different resources.
Please keep in mind that apart for energy oil is also being used in a LOT of everyday products, so many i cannot list them here.

In fact the prediction is so that if we don't have access to oil anymore and we don't have alternatives for it the human catastrophy will be so great it will seriously threaten human existence.

Anything but oil. It just takes a little willingness by a whole lot of people. Hope it happens in my lifetime.

dutchboy: can you post that link up here? other people might find it interesting as well.
"..the human catastrophy will be so great it will seriously threaten human existence."
yeah. but more the western world as the rest of the world. a lot of underdeveloped (dumb word) countries have little to no electricity (relative to what we use). they however will survive much more easy in such a situation. that's underdeveloped for ya :)

mg33: i think the root of all evil lies in the egoistic character of the human being. we want everything cheap and we want it now. if we would be willing to pay more it would prolly go a bit faster. e.g. pay more for a solar roof.
on the other side corporations are in a way just as human beings, making as much as profit as possible, as fast as possible with the lowest costs. the only way to change a corporation would be a worldwide consumer ban. if noone would by a car for a year they would prolly listen. but fat chance if that's gonna happen. because we want to be rich and famous. and hey, shit happens after i'm dead so why should i care about my kids future.

rab : developing countries should benefit greatly from the development of energy efficient and alternative energy development. although imperfect the Joint implementation and Clean development mechanisms of Kyoto.
on another note I have just switched my energy provider to a renewable company which is relatively new opportunity for residential customers in ireland

Third world countries and developing nations will play a big role in all this. Ironic, in some ways, that these nations that have little to no technology will be utilizing the latest and greatest long before we will.
For example, using a windmill to get fresh well water in isolated areas, solar to power computers (why can't I have a solar panel on my deck?? Damn, I'd pay a lot for reliable, like no storm could fry my system, power!!), on and on.
I'd assume that it will be the same for wireless, as they won't have limitations of existing infrastructure to keep using. The world will be a different place soon, and I am sure many places are looking on our dependencies, wars, scandals, and deciding when the time comes to stay independent. It'd be a wise move, for sure.
