i refuse to do any less than $600 US, even for smaller bands, its just so time consuming.
when i first started out i did 2 or 3 for $300 which was a nightmare, just turned into such an ordeal.
once you hit up big labels you can get a considerable amount of money, but then again, once you are dealing with majors there are so many cooks in the kitchen that you want to put a bullet in your head.

1500-3000 is like the industry standard
but i figure like whatever floats your boat...
and i hate people that say things like
"you're fuckin up the industry charging 75-100"
shut the fuck up
a person can charge what they want, even if its madd low
yall act like every one's wearin gucci sandals and tight fittin dior sweater's w/ pink dk scarfs...

i changed my price to $500
and this dude's only charging $150 for a website
- contra0
Yeah, what about it?
- jakeyj0
didn't you read the thread contra?

What are you planning to do for it? Images cost money, shooting photos takes time, illustrations take time etc etc. Designing a CD is usually more than just a simple layout job.
And $75-$100 dollars is a joke, unless you're still at school.

or you charge a client 2000 and hire the 150 guy to do it for you.
- Gorbie0
depends how much you like the person.
I'm doing a package and logo for a small group for free. but the guy barely has enough cash to produce a 10".
i don't feel i'm bringing down the industry - in fact i could use a couple more free-range, pro-bono jobs.

i ask 400 euros for a digipack...
- jakeyj0
i just told him i wouldn't take less than 500 for the design

I agree with what was said about how much you would like to make based on your experience. Also take into account how long it's going to take you. 75-100 is peanuts. You might as well sling coffee at Starbucks for minimum wage. Try to convey to you client the value in your design and they should be willing to pay for your "artistic vision".

i have a huge problem with low-balling like this, even for newbies. its dragging the industry down to the lowest of lows. $75-$100 is ridiculous.. how many hours were you planning to put into the project? all said and done (remember client approvals, dealing with printers, etc) i doubt it'll be less than 10hrs, which equates to almost minimum wage. also consider as the designer you are partly responsible for what comes off the press, and this responsibility comes at a price.
have some respect for your time and skills.. even for a buddy i wouldn't go less than $500.

$300 for a 6pg cd package? There is no excuse for such low pricing unless you are an 17 year old rock-n-roll fan with no experience.

$1000-1500

very true

If you have the experience and your work is tight $1500.
Low balling will just continue to hurt the industry. You need to take into consideration how much they'll make off of the CD. Yes people buy the CD because they like the music. But more will buy the CD if the Packaging on it is done right.

i'm not dying for experience or work - i'm up to my ears in it already. just haven't done CD's yet.
thanks for the tips doods.
