Anyone know what's a reasonable day rate for a young (recent grad) production designer in NY at a small shop?
We were thinking $150 a day for someone 4 days a week who's decent at print and interactive that we're willing to teach, nothing heavy.
50% production design from templates dropping in photos and setting text.
Thanks all

ouch, I feel for that kid. A few drinks after work in NYC and your back at square one.
How 'bout $200. /day

I would imagine it would be somewhere closer to $25-30 an hour in NYC. You get what you pay for my friend.

does a lunch come with the $150?
you have got to step it up man, thats like 17 bucks per hour

it's all relative gilt,
If your paying 1800 for a closet space of an apt. and your lunch is $30. $150 a day in NYC is like $20/day in many other palces

well we figured 20 an hour is pretty reasonable for a junior production designer. 8hrs would be $160.
I know you get what you pay for. We''re paying 25 an hour for someone just a bit bove that level skill wise, but she does Flash.

would you work for that mcfly?
the lowest here in chi-town i've seen/herd is $23ish an hour. for $150 a day you might as well post on craigslist.

We figured $150 (or $160) a day for 3-4 days is still 450+ a week for a part time job. It's NY, but the person we're looking for almost certainly is sharing an apartment, a recent grad whoi's smart.
If they rock out and we can afford it, we'll totally bump them up.

Kona, do you do print work or just interactive?

Kona--i'm not trying to hose anyone, it's not a matter of whether I'd work for 20 an hour.
No I wouldn't, but I've been designign interactive for over a decade and am running a small shop w/ overhead. When I graduated, I would have jumped at $20 an hour. Granted it was 10 yuears ago, but I was making 25G a year.
W're looking for a roduduction designer, not an experienced designer. I know noone here would go for the job, this isn't the audience.

I think that's too low. Despite how heavy the work is, a part-time worker, I assume, won't be receiving any benifits or health-insurance. Nor will a 4-day/week job permit this person to get another part-time job that would provide benifits.
Also, recent grads often have loans to pay back and it's unfair to force someone to HAVE to live with other people to afford a place.
I make above what you are offering and I still have a hard time affording my place in the BRONX. I spend $10 dollars on food (lunch and dinner) at most.

PS. I can't spell "benefits."
