I was wondering how people start their creative work in process. Alot of "designers" immediately start to put the powerbutton on of their computer. In my opinion a limitation of freedom in creativity.
My first start and thing I do before I start is sketching on paper, writing or drawing the subject to communicate. Making different explorations to see it from a different kind of view.
How do you work/start? How do you think about it?

True:
1. Wake up in the middle of the night
2. Have a sandwich
3. Cruddle something down on a piece of paper
4. Work on it the following day

Not necessarily in order but usually something like this...
1> music selection
2> initial brainstorm sketches
3> research ideas / concepts
4> expose and absorb (books, magazines, ephemera, photographs, google, whatever) to fill my subconscious bufferif i'm stuck at this point I'll have a spliff, to chemically let my subconscious start cycling through the options and making otherwise unthought of connections. It's sort've a forced dream state. Otherwise i usually come up with the finalised ideas while i'm trying to fall asleep.
> turn on the computer. I normally use illustrator to hash out ideas, colours, formats.
Sometimes I go to the computer right away, and do the identity / whatever right then and there. But my math teachers always got mad at me for not showing my work because I always did it in my head. Clients like to see a progression, it normally helps to sell an idea if you can show that you've worked it through as oppossed to "here is your golden coconut!" that way if you've done your work correctly by the time you show your final solution they are on the same page as you are and don't have to "get their heads around it".

think about it,
think about it some more,
scribble something on a pad
looks a few design books,
think some more,
delay touching the computer until i have a foundation
then work my ass off until deadline...
