Not necessarily in order but usually something like this...
1> music selection
2> initial brainstorm sketches
3> research ideas / concepts
4> expose and absorb (books, magazines, ephemera, photographs, google, whatever) to fill my subconscious bufferif i'm stuck at this point I'll have a spliff, to chemically let my subconscious start cycling through the options and making otherwise unthought of connections. It's sort've a forced dream state. Otherwise i usually come up with the finalised ideas while i'm trying to fall asleep.

Sometimes I go to the computer right away, and do the identity / whatever right then and there. But my math teachers always got mad at me for not showing my work because I always did it in my head. Clients like to see a progression, it normally helps to sell an idea if you can show that you've worked it through as oppossed to "here is your golden coconut!" that way if you've done your work correctly by the time you show your final solution they are on the same page as you are and don't have to "get their heads around it".
