Mine is 2000 Beetle, overheated 4 times this year leaving me stranded. 80000 miles.
My wife's is 2003 turbo beetle. less than 30k miles, been in the shop 12 times, of which towed 7 times.
While in the waiting room at the service dept. they had Consumer Reports cars, VW beetle and Jetta scored least reliable compact car!
Never again!

Maybe you just beat the hell out of them?!?
When your wife comes home does it have blood stains on the windshield from running over homeless people and corn stalks stuffed under the wipers?!? That may be a good sign that she's driving the shit out of it.... or.... you just bought a couple of lemons.

I drive it every day, is that beating the hell out of it?
No after visiting beetleforums i realize i am not alone.
Consumer Reports really drove it home for me.
They run fine for a while, the its all down hill.

but the people in the comercials look so happy :(
:P

The 1.8T actually scored most reliable engine in europe back in '02.
Same driving school, you and your wife? ;)

I agree, once you're past 60k miles...look out. They're shit.

My wife has an '04 NBC 1.8T - no problems at all yet....

I've had no major problems with any of the VW's I have owned... currently on my 3rd.
but, i wouldn never consider buying one again... these cars are way over priced here in Canada... I feel there are better euro-car options here other than VW.

having said that I personally always buy japanese

my 2000 was fine until 60k.
We are persuing lemon law suit for my wife's.
They start out fine, just small problems, little plastic things fall off (and theres lots of plastic in those cars), small electronic problems.
There are just serious quality problems, and the dealership folks are nazi's.
Just wanted to warn folks about these cars. Read up before you buy.

I've got a 2001 jetta 1.8t. Love the car and it hasn't been a bit of trouble. Sorry that you haven't had the same luck.
- Mimio0
The data speaks for itself. By-and-large they're problematic cars.

I still can't get past the part where you're a guy and you bought a beetle.
Just kidding. Maybe it has something to do with the year. My wife's 2000 Jetta was a piece of crap.

oh no you didn't just dis the new 6 series???
shame on you.

Oncer the redesigned the line in 98 it all went to shit, I had a beetle myself, I literally could not keep it on the road.
1. the exhaust fell off...literally
2. the drivers side window fell out
3. after that was fixed the passenger window fell out
4.the electrical system went up
5. the driver seat broke
6. the radio shorted again, electrical system went up a 2nd time, this time it hit the odometer chip so the milage could not be prooved (sp?)
7. steering column strippedmy beetle when i finally sold it off...for a loss only had 40,000 miles on it, it was a '99
i am very happy not owning a volkswagen again
