welcome to print hell
muahahaha!the key is a good calibrated monitor. a solid photographer and a quality pressman at an even more quality print press.

but the question is
how do you know if your monitor is goodly calibrated?

This question is difficult to answer without writing a book on it. A well-calibrated monitor is key, as stated already, also make sure you are using appropriate color profiles. Keep a good relationship with your pressman, (if you are printing offset, digital is just another story) he can help you keep your colors accurate.

oh and like zarayy said about the color profiles, some printers will provide their prepress' color profiles. it might make the production look or seem a little funny, but the end product will be a bit less painless

01. Have a good calibrated monitor (pref. Barco or less expensive LA CIE ELECTRON III)
02. Work in CMYK, pref. colorprofile Euroscale / Pre-press adapted to Monitor calibration.
03. Use in all software the same color profile.
04. Use a CMYK printer, for instance HP Laser jet 5500 N. Or Epson/Xerox and Tektronix have good ones too.
05. Use the same paper where it will be reproduced on.
06. always remember that it can never match 100%. It can get close. The perfectmatch is a direct Offset Print Proof from the Printer itself.
TIP : Ask your local printer for a FULL COLOUR TEST or BOOK. you can use this for calibrating scanner, monitor etc. They are often digitally monitored with digital calibration units. Printer uses these often for cliënts or internally.
hope this works. it work for me.
