Hey,
I'm using windows XP and I want to know how to restrict data acccording to user profiles. I have a main hard drive where i host my programs and another hard drive for storing data. The way it was configured before was i had two user profiles set up, user A and user B. Both users could save to the data hard drive (we'l refer to it as F:/ henceforth), but neither could see each other's data.Well my hard drive crashed and i had to replace it, but I dont know how to configure it so that each user can only see their data. Because the way it is now is that both can see eachother's data on the F:/ drive which I dont want. How do i fix is so each person ONLY sees their data?
thanks

Right Click on your drive - Sharning. maybe?

Start->Control Panel->Folder Options
Then goto the View tab at the top. Uncheck (Use Simple File Sharing).
When you right click on any folders, files, or hard drives there will now be a Security tab which will allow you to set read, write, and execute permission to groups or users.

Apart from manually setting permissions like that, doesn't XP have an accounts system where if you create a new user their 'home' folder is accessible only by them unless you make alterations. (i.e like OSX Users, or UNIX accounts).

oh this is effectively access to an external drive... as you were..

Thanks for the suggestion BUT it doesn't work. If I make a folder in my F:/ under account Profile A, and i log into Profile B, I still have access to the the folder created by Profile A, which is not what I want.
Any other suggestions?

but have you tried setting the permissions for that folder in Sharing/Security?

yup, no dice. Unless im doing it wrong.
Any other ideas? I dont want to start recording stuff until i've figured this out!

To clarify, both accounts have Administrator permissions. The way it was configured originally, i never had to set permissions on any file/folder i made. It was like by default, ANY folder I made would only be visible to the user profile that made it. Think of it this way, when you have different user profiles, everyone's desktop looks different according to the individual. thats the way it was for my f:/ drive the way the guy set it up.
It was set up like that before my hard drive crashed, so i know that it is possible. I dont have contact with the guy that did it for me originally, so thats why im asking here. thanks.
