is there any type of creative brief for designing a logo for a company?
for example, a document like a CB that will establish guidelines for what the company is looking for?
thank you!

that sounds like bad news anyway you look at it.
I would say the creative brief consists of what the company does and what type of client it serves.
that alone should give most designers a strong idea of what you're looking for.

just so you've got an answer:
i personally have a list of Q&A which i fire at 'em (evolving depending on the client) which includes:
• What is unique about your service / company?
• Who are your target market/audience?
• Who are your direct /indirect competition?
• Where in your industry / field do you see yourself placed? (top end, affordable, etc)
• How do you want to be perceived? (they may wish to be seen as hip/modern, casual, fun, staunch, oldschool, etc, etc) or the ymay wish to look like either a large company or small business - very different looks.
• Do any other styles or identities create the impression you are after?there are others but they mainly stem from these for me. i like to discuss these points with the client and get them to almost 'discover' what they want while we talk. after all the client should know there business better than we do.
sorry if this doesnt help.
