I have this CRAZY friend that doesn't have a legally registered copy of Flash MX.
Now I hear some people say that you can tell by the SWF's it spits out that it is not legally registered, or something to that degree. Is it true?
- hellvetica0
No!!
Made up by Macromedia to stop people from using illegal copies

Ok, so like for instance, this friend of mine tests his movies by pressing ctrl+enter twice. And then it is completely sluggish and jerky. This effect is duplicated in some browsers like FireFox and Mozilla.
That's unrelated?

Tell your "friend" to buy it anyways?

i have this crazy friend that says that eating meat is wrong, is he crazy?
your problem is probably that your computer can't handle the processor load that the movie requires, ie. too many equations, complex animations, alpha transparencies, etc. if you're trying to animated jpgs for example, you're going to get some slow down on slower machines
- fate0
function82, but that's not the the problem. It runs fine in IE and if I just pres ctrl+enter to test it works fine....
What I was talking about is pressing ctrl+enter twice, which takes you into the bandwidth profiler...thingy. IT's sluggish and it's indicative of deeper problems I think.

oh, and function82, I just watched that episode last night :p
- jpea0
is there a preloader on it?
if not, and you take it into the bandwidth profiler, yeah, you're gonna have a damn slugish movie just cause it's not gonna be loaded , but it'll still try to play itand no, there's no way to tell an swf from a legal app or an illegal one. the swf format is an open format, it just so happens that macromedia makes the most popular program to make 'em with... they can't screw with the format without telling us

when you go to the bandwidth profiler it simulates an internet connection......silly billy, therefore it will run slower. when you press enter once it previews it on your computer not a simulation of the bandwidth.
- function820
oh, that explains it
pressing crtl-enter twice will make the movie simulate a connection speed. if you have it set to 56k or 28k, its going to run slow, because its loading, and also because its simulating the speed that the connection can recieve data, its going to run slower when you do this, thats the point of the profiler, to see how it will work at different connection speeds

guys, guys, I got all that down, of course it has a preloader. Of course I know it's supposed to load slowly.
But I think there are deeper issues. Like the mouse movement is choppy. Animations are sluggish. Things like that.
Here, if ya'll wanna give a quick alpha test, I'm having troubles in Safari and FireFox...
- function820
yeah, you're right about the speed, safari on a g4, runs really slow
whats the frame rate?
- fate0
31 fps
- function820
it also looks like you're animating alot of jpg or pngs... this is going to cause havoc as far as speed is concerned
- fate0
function, but it's fine in IE and in the flash testing environment. As long as you have even a moderate amount of ram it should run smoothly.
- function820
heh, thats a strange frame rate :D
- fate0
It's designed to overcome the 30fps Mac dropout deal. Anyway, I've tried getting rid of some of the PNG sequences and shite, but to no avail, still jerky.
- chossy0
how may movies do you have playing at once
- function820
yeah, it is strange
what systems are you using to test it?
i know with safari and my g4, alot of big flash files run terrible, which i've heard is a problem with mac handling flash animations (video card or processor, not sure of details, just a rumor i heard) my system has 1.5 gigs of ram, so i know thats not the problem
- fate0
no external swf's in there, if that's what you mean chossy.
- fate0
I'm on a 1ghz 256mb Ram system with XP Pro...that's pretty low-end these days, and it runs quite pretty in IE and Flash.
