I know this has been brought up 1,000,000,000 times, but does anyone have experience with a good digital camera for taking action shots (quick shutter speed)? not too expensive...under 1k.

any camera will perform if you have the right light and you know how to use it

most digital cameras had a serious delay when taking photos. i was just checking to see if anyone knew of any that have a quick response when taking a photo....

Nikon D70!

that's actually the one that I was looking at, but I'd like to see if there is anything cheaper out there with quick reaction time.

for skate photography.. i would seriously go for film.. due to the reaction time...
ive shot skate photography with a powershot S35 and a S50... lol
it really depends on the skill level too... i shot with a 35 mm for years before i switched over to digital.. i still shoot 50/50 digital/35mm
i am looking at an 11MP 10 000 canon camera! but.. its gonna hit me hard if i buy it...

If you mean a delay in taking the photo, and that being bad because it's an action shot:
What many people seem to forget is that you can depress the button to focus on the area you are taking the photo of so it's in focus.
Then when the movement comes across, fully depress the button and you're pretty much taking the photo faster than if you let it focus and took the photo all at once.Works with some cameras and doesn't work with some cameras.

canon digital rebel?

bump for the d70
ive shot with it and as long as you dont need to go bigger than 8x10 for prints its pretty sickand because its digital you get instant feed back on your exposure, like a polaroid back
check ebay

My canon a80 does great, fast sequence shots. I used it several times for fast reaction shots. Just start shooting from the start and pick the one you want. The interval is fast enough to get all the action. Otherwise... go pro

if you're looking for action sequence stay away from the D70... its only 3 fps, that pretty slow for skate action photog.
i talked to j. grant brittain awhile back when he was photo editor over at TWS and he told me about 90% of skate shots in the mag were shot using a med format camera being that they can lug a lot of gear around. he also said he figured they were about 2 years away from running a full page digi shot and he thinks the future will be digi, we're just not quite there yet.
unfortunately if you want fast shutter speed in a digi cam you're gonna have to pay for it... the most affordable option i have seen is the Canon EOS 20D with 8.5mp and 5fps or the Nikon DH2 at 8fps but only has 4.3mp.
I'm really itching to buy a Nikon digi body to go with my Nikon F5 35mm body and lenses but i don't feel the cameras are quite where they need to be yet. I still prefer to shoot 35mm for all my snowboard, mtn. bike and skate action photography.

you're going to need way more than 3 frames per second. else you're just wasting your money. go film. for sequences, you need at least 6 frames.

oh and if you're looking to shoot skate specific a super wide lens like someting around 10mm is must other wise that 3 step down is going to look like shit.

Hey... unfortunately, you're going to run into slow response with most digital cameras until you start plopping down more scratch... lots of it... the high end cameras work almost as well as a Nikon 6000 or 8000 series. If I were you, I'd go video instead..stay low-fi with the photos and invest in a video camera to pull low k images for use!...one more thing... have fun!

ya I've got e decent video camer with the fisheye, but I'm looking for mag quality photos.

j. grant brittain would be a good person to listen to. he takes some sick photos.

j. grant brittain is the man, i got the chance to see a lot of his non-skate work and was just as amazed.
he's doing a kick ass job with The Skateboard Mag too... such a welcome change to stale ass TWS.
