meh.
it's not really getting my attention; not a huge fan of the fonts and layout. Jons back in texas is that the name of the magazine? or is it metro skate i'm confused.

cut down on the fonts

if its going to be an ongoing thing, you need to design a header that you can use over and over again. create a brand.
also the type is all over the place and similar in size, so there is no hierarchy

kill the horizontal lines, make them more dynamic, either 10 degrees or even 65 degree rotation..
also, the photo looks too digital.. mock it up, make it look cross processed. or posterize it, something! ahh!
anyhow, thats just me... when i think skate i think more daring.... and raw.

yea simplify it
lose vertical strip,
not liking the multi colour headings
- tymeframe0
the verticle strip is our brand...though i was thinking about running it accross the top, cliché like every other zine out there..
is the top text working or not? i'm feeling that but having trouble with the contents text (bottom crap)
thanks for the comments all

i think the 'johns backin texas' is the most promising section of the cover
but i dunno bout the angles, i think it would be better without the alternate rotation of the work 'Johns Backin'

I agree with the other comments. Not a bad start.

I would look and see if your brand doesn't need a little more thought. 'Metro' is fairly loaded right now. Not liking the city scape image. get down to the street level if your going 'zine'. graffiti or something else, art maybe?
the text on the bottom isn't bad.

Yeah, i tink the cover type aint too bad, but I agree with
pablokorona that the cover image yould use a tweak. My 2-cents

i feel you really need to rethink this from both a style and layout standpoint.
1. there is a reason for putting the masthead in the top 1/4 of the magazine as this is usually all that is visible on the shelf. right now people are going to see some sky and part of the "John's Backin" text.
2. the image should be closer cropped as to bring more focus to the rider in the shot... too much background for a cover shot.
3. It doesn't really fit into the clean more simplistic style that skateboarding is taking these days.
Pick up a copy of the skateboard mag for a kick ass example of where the skate mags are heading.

Overall it just really looks like something I would see in a skate mag from mid 90's.

1. Take some design classes.
2. Learn correct punctuation.
3. Take more design classes
4. Read some decent design books
