Ray Caesar is obviously a very talented guy http://www.raycaesar.com
but it's also obvious that he is VERY inspired by Mark Ryden
http://www.markryden.com.So inspired to the point that even his site works just like Rydens site.
However Ray Caesar make NO mention of Ryden whatsoever. Not even a link on the links page.
What do you guys think about this?

Yea interesting...I definatly knew who Mark Ryden was before Ray Caesar became so popular. I love both there work though.

It's just a question, beacuse I'm not sure how I feel about this.
This is getting really close to copying a style, if it's not already.
there will be many opinions I'm sure. The thing is, Ray caesar is very good. So do we let ot go?The reason I ask, I have seen on this board, people getting just blasted for copying a style. usually these copy cats don't even copy well so it leads me to think, that if you copy it bad, then you will be blasted. If you do it well then it will be over looked.
Just a thought.

yeah like omg it has buttons and everything!
I dunno it looks similar but so do lots of things, the inspiration for both artists likely 50's/60's books and illustrative styles, when I was a kid I had this old cot that had picrures on it that weremore surreal than both these guys, but in the same style. Interestingly, Ray Caeser is older than mark ryden and yet works entirely digitally. hmmm.

I was aware of Caesar's work before Ryden's. I guess i got that the wrong way round. To be honest, i really hate it.You can't blame anyone in particular i guess, because both work is of such good quality. But i hate when a style becomes so ubiquitous that it loses its punch. And i've seen this "twisted-fairy" tale style so much over the last year or two - not just from those two guys. It's only a matter of time before graphic designers start using cutesy deformed children instead of reindeer heads.

having said that, it's normally consumers who start categorising things, and linking them together, whilst artists can easily create something completely independently and still look similar to other artists.
