I maintain several sites. A couple of days ago, one site stopped letting me connect via ftp from my home cable connection.
I can still connect to my other sites.
I can still connect to this site if it's from somewhere else, like my office.
I can't connect to the problem site from any of my computers at home.
I talked to the guy at the hosting company, he says nothing's changed there.
The message I get in OS X Terminal is "421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection". I've tried various FTP programs, they all do variations of this.My best theory now is that Comcast cable has decided to block me from ftping this address. That makes no sense! But I'm not that smart, just a designer type..
What can I do? Get a dial-up connection?
thanks for listening

Dunno much about it either, but check with that site's admin and read this.

try using passive FTP... your FTP help should have info on how to set it up to FTP using passive mode..

this exact same thing is happening to me. damn frustrating.
i'm pretty sure it has something to do with my ISP, but their tech support is worthless unless you're looking to have your bloodpressure raised.
in theory, the passive ftp thing should work, but it didn't for me.
btw, my isp claims that they do not block ip addresses. anything else along those lines that it could be?

nuggler: who are you hosting with? i have three sites with Catalog.com and those are the three that cannot be accessed from my house.

if i figure out on my end I'll be sure to send you an email.
if you get it worked out, please do the same.
anyone else have any ideas about this?

Solved:
"Looks like we found the problem. Someone used your IP address to portscan
the server. The server subsequently thought it was being hacked and
blocked your specific IP."So which one of you bastards was trying to PORTSCAn my SERVER? I hope you had a good time.
- ribit0
They didnt portscan your server... they used your server to portscan the ISP's server. You have a security problem (or your ISP does). Do you share your IP with other sites?
- ribit0
Did I read that email right? They are referring to an attack on the ISP? Not that a Portscan is that serious...it happens all the time doesnt it?

The ISP is set to block IPs that have attempted a Portscan. As I understand it, a portscan is not an attack, it's just somebody or some thing checking to see what ports are available on a server. Could have been malicious, or not.
