for me, I think it really depends on the project. Some call for more heavier tunes like punk rock, others call for something lighter and more of the Jazz genre. Music is mood based... in my case, project based.

I listen to a lot of st. germain, masive attack, amon tobin when I work. Can be relaxing but some of it can have a fair bit of energy.

I am listening to Sean Hayes right now, so chill. I really enjoy low key stuff when I am working; folk, ambient, whatever. Lots of Keller Williams and Ben Harper lately.
Aphex Twin, Mum and Squarepusher sometimes.
My old favorite right now would probably be the Asphodelic release, circa 1999.
Its awesome.
