who uses what, and what are the pro's/con's of each? im new to the mac scene at home, just got a G5, and have like 7000 typefaces. seems to take forever to enable/disable fonts in fontbook, but i like how you can scroll through and preview.
i have font reserve installed too, could they be an conflicting?
thanks for the info, it's driving me mad! and whats with PS limiting the number of fonts?

Perhaps any of following links can help you... I'm currently using Suitcase but i don't like it... Wondering if Adobe is gonna release a OSX version of ATM?

I'm using suitcase-- a little buggy, but does the job

don't even think of using Font Book with 7000 fonts, it funks up at around 1000. don't get me wrong, i absolutely love the program, but it's not very strong. make sure you resolve all your duplicates as well.

hey auricom, how do i resolve my dups? the thing is, i was given fonts from 2 diff people, just threw them all on there, now have a big pile of fonts(like 2000 some fonts, 6000 typefaces). how do i even know if i have duplicates? sorry for such novice questions, it's all new to me :) is there a font management resource online that would be helpful? thanks for all the responses so far...

Font Reserver and Font book on the same machine will have database problems.
Font Book, IMHO, is unstable.
I hear Suitcase works best on Panther these days, but I had trouble there as well, with a high nnumber of fonts.
I use Font Reserve, from Jaguar, in Panther. I removed the Font Book database. Works fine. Stable, solid.

the duplicates will have black dots next to them. an easy thing to do is go here:
homefolder(house icon)/library/fonts then copy those fonts to a folder on your desktop or somewhere then trash the ones in the actual font folder. this will give you a chance to start over in FontBook and only add the ones you'll really need. by doing this you'll clean out the fonts you installed and not effect the ones for the system.
also in font book, go to the preference menu FontBook and check Always Copy Fonts.

also, if your going to need to work with that many fonts, i would definitely consider getting Suitcase X. if you do, make sure you do what i meantioned and clean out all the fonts that you installed. when font book and suitcase are running at the sametime, it can cause some conflicts.

sweet. thanks for your help auricom, much appreciated.

was working with font book, but it could not cope with loads of fonts - have settled on suitcase X1 at the moment, seems to be ok.. fingers crossed (bring back ATM)

I agree with auricom about FontBook. I am currently using FontBook with no issues, but I've experienced all those crazy problems they speak of with the g4 and having thousands of fonts loaded. Now I have the G5 but have to limit my fonts a great deal. I have about 2500 loaded. It's still smooth, but I don't have the all the fonts I want. The resolve duplicates also doesn't always work. The black dot stays sometimes, and other times it comes back if it doesn disappear. it's really weird. Good luck.

man, sounds like an on-going issue, with no real solution, just preference. i have another question: in photoshop, when i highlight my text, then goto the font drop down, i use the up/down arrows to pick a font so that i can see it change in the document...a lot of my fonts look all jagged and shit, whats up with that?
