my circumstance is this:
my friend who is signed to an indy label doesn't listen to new music. i'm guessing it's b/c he doesn't have money to buy the music. i thought of burning cds for him. then remembered he'd take it as a slap in the face b/c of the whole ripping off the artist issue.
just got me thinking.

buy him one nice cd if he's your friend and he's down in the dumps, or something else he might enjoy.
personally i'd rather my friends take that $5 and have a chat w/me over a pint.

if one of your friends takes a gift as a slap in the face then best give him a slap in the face and remind him to take that as a gift ;P

I think you're being a bit too sensitive over it and if he gets all vexed about it, then he's being a jackass. But at the same time, most new music isn't worth the listen anyways.

i dont understand the price of cd's anyway. compare them to the price of a dvd.
take all the expense it takes to make a movie and contrast it to that of making an album.
go to a record/movie store and there is like a $7 difference in price.
it's inconceivable to me.

sharing music is a wonderful thing. i've been getting turned onto bands that way since i was a little kid.
and i've always dumped a lot of money into that industry.
i guess i'm saying i wouldn't consider it a slap in the face.

you realise that in the UK albums can cost like £15-16 , thats the best of $30... last year the UK had their highest ever album sales, this year the highest ever singles sales yet they complain of dropping profits. No mention that they are now competing in a so called 'global' market yet ban online trading of CD's coming from areas where the SAME labels and distributors sell them for much less, no mention of the absurd profits they have been making for the last 30 years, no mention of the SHIT music most of them insist on spending ridiculous amounts marketing.
They basically expect constantly rising profits and any loss caused by their own mistakes/bad judgement be paid for by the consumer...
major labels are blood sucking parasitic cunts

_salisae_ you've got some nice picks there, many I'm unfamiliar with like the unicorns, iron and wine, deerhoof and the decemberists.
I'm not a big Franz Ferdinand or modest mouse fan, but I like the shins and savath and savalas. The others I've only heard a couple of songs from so I can't really judge. I'm mostly into hip hop like J-Live, Five Deez, Fat Jon, RJD2, All Natural, none of that hardcore commercial shit. Other than that I'm also a big Quantic, Jon Kennedy, Tru Thoughts-esque breakbeat fan. As well as rare groove soul, jazz and funk.
Can you post mp3's of some of that stuff?
