Friends,
What are the best places to live in NYC? (that does not cost $1,500 for 300 SF...)
Brooklyn? Queens? Bronx?
Or??
Any advice?

This is a very vague question? "Best" is a subjective term and it depends on what you're interested in. Safe and quiet neighborhood? Close proximity to night life? Bars and restaurants? Parks? Etc, Etc.
There are deals to be found all over the city if you look hard enough, but for the most part 1500 won't get you much in Manhattan (with the exception of a studio and a place uptown in Washington Heights).
Brooklyn is pretty expensive, but if you have a roommate or a few, you can definitely get a decent-sized loft in Williamsburg or Bushwick. Also check out downtown Brooklyn, Fort Greene, etc. Expensive, but deals can be found.
In Queens, check out Astoria, Long Island City, Jackson Heights, and Sunnyside.
I'm in the Bronx and if you are really that interested in moving here, you can definitely get a 2 bedroom for 1500. I live in Pelham Parkway/Morris Park neighborhood. Real nice, but no nightlife and a bit of a hike downtown.

Thanks for the info!
I am just curious to know what's out there. I am coming to NY in a few day's to go on some interviews.
So, the idea for an apartment under $1,000 is out of the question huh?
There has to be something!?

I know it's gay but you can always search the Craigslist in NY.
I hit up the Chicago part of it looking for apts and there are a TON!
Try this...

You can DEFINITELY find places for less than $1000. Probably even in the city too. Do you want your own place or would you be willing to share with someone? That's the best way to get a cheap place.
I pay a grand and I have about 1000 sf in the Bronx. I have friends that just got a 3 story loft in East Williamsburg for 2400 and they have room for 8 people there. You do the math.

Wow,
that's FRESH!
I best friend is in manhattan and pay's $1,350 for like 230 SF..
Yikes.

The city is nice, but only if you have a lot of money to spend. Otherwise, it's not worth it. A commute from Brooklyn is only 15 minutes and you can get a lot more space.

I know..
I agree...
Ok, stupid question but......
can I bring my car?
- adamfinger0
Depends on the neighborhood.

Thanks for all your advice..

in youre going to live in manhattan like upper east side - youre going to have to move it constantly - thast teh biggest pain about having a car in the city... more that it will get towed than fucked with.. cept in brooklyn :P

i just got a spot on the uppereast side for under 1000. Its a pretty big studio too. Well compared to other places i saw.

I lived in Astoria, Queens for 2 years and then Upper East Side for another 2.5. I would say go for either that area of maybe Forest Hills in Queens, cheaper as you go further outside the city generally, but that's not always true, depends on what you want and for how long and type of joint. You're in for a ride if you go there not knowing anybody or anything. Good luck :)

I used to pay $800 per month in Queens. Not too bad either. I could point you in the right direction Eric.

An often overlooked place is Redhook. It's not as convenient in that its a hike or bus ride to the nearest subway but its a very cool neighborhood and close to the water...and pretty cheap.

Chinatown is great..
studio apts for 900$..only thing is you might be a little scared of your building..
Just walk around find numbers..
some place are nice... mine was 1500 1 bedroom home office and I share..The whole area is being villagified..
look around clinton st as well
- JazX0
Redhook isn't overlooked, it's common. Also putting out Beer. ;)
- monkeyshine0
JazX, you lush! I think Red Hook beer is actually from Seattle. Brooklyn beer , however..yum.
Red Hook is where I *almost* moved and then freaked after 9-11 but I fell in love with that area.
- tara|gee0
i am thinking of buyinga polace in redhook - i think parkslope is gonna grow that way what u guys think....
- JazX0
RedHook isn't from Brooklyn. I could swear it is... Ahhh your damn right it is in Washington State. But they do put out a beer in Redhook, Brooklyn too. Lots of German immigrated into that area.
BTW, I was 20 blocks from 9-11 and ran North East as fast as I could. ;)

Parkslope is way too high in price, but not a bad place to live in Brooklyn.
