Whoah, how the fuck is a freelance client gonna make you take a drug test? That shit shouldn't be in the contract.

Seems a bit Big Brother to me...whatever happened to personal freedom?... Are the companies ersatz police now?
- idsgn0
was he the only one to receive the test?
seems like an excuse to get him canned

your friend should have known better. If he knew there was a "random" drug testing policy and if he was the youngest, common sense would tell a person he would be one of the first to be "randomly" tested...
Especially working for a hospital... wtf, but if he didn't care about the job too much who gives a sh!t anyway

I had to take one for my job (cuz company insurance is cheeper if you drug test)... they gave me the heads up tho. And I started drinking water like a muther fucker.
clean in 1 week with water and excercise.

Americans are obsessed with drug testing... you have to get tested to work at Blockbuster fucking video for chrissakes. I mean how many teenagers does that eliminate from the job market? You're not operating heavy machinery or dealing with people's lives here... you're a fucking clerk at a shitty video store. If I was a clerk I would certainly do drugs just to numb the pain.
Besides, aren't us zany, wacky creative types typically known for our excessive drug consumption? Should it be a surprise to anyone?
I worked for a design company that dealt exclusively with big name surf/snowboard/skate clients a while back and they had a racketball court built into their palatial offices with shower and locker rooms. No one really used the Racketball court however the locker room was used by everyone as the smoking room. Everyone had their own locker for their supply. Half the staff spent each and every day stoned 11-7. Shit got done though and the output was amazing.
Most of the US Pokemon packaging and product design was done by a 24-7 stoner.

i once worked for a company and the joke was "Drug Test - What kind of weed is this?"

i heard blockbuster would cut your hair and test that way. that's scary. god forbid someone puts a video back in the wrong place.

to play devil's advocate... if you have such a problem with drug testing, don't work for a company that does it.... it is really quite simple.

speed_d:
My career choices have put me beyond hopefully ever having to take a drug test again. However it still makes me angry that companies feel the need to pry into your personal life. Because that's just what it is, personal. That's the same attitude a cop takes when you resist a search. 'What do you have to hide if you don't want me to search you?' It's slippery slope logic meaning that you should never try to address the argument based upon the cops assertions but maintain your right not to be searched. Drug testing is forced and it's invasive of your personal space even if you don't do drugs to be treated or suspected of as much is inhumane in my opinion.
Ultimately you're right, don't work for a company that does. But in America it has become such a prevelant cultural aspect of working for almost any company that it's quite frightening. It's the deeper issue of personal/work space and how it overflows that niggles me. What's next? Ever seen Gattaca?

I worked for a company in which my supervisor was a heroine addict. AT WORK. This is of course different than what you are saying I realize... but my company had a drug testing policy and never enforced it, and in this case something needed to be done...
I agree that what you do on your time is non of your employers business, but sometimes what you do your time my affect "their" time. Some employees will always take advantage of a situation, which unfortunately will have a negative effect for those who obey work rules...
But also the company as a whole must be taken into consideration. If they have a drug testing policy because somewhere in the company people are operating heavy equipment, than it would be unfair to only test the ones operating the equipment.
not to mention it is against the law in the U.S. anyway, so technically speaking people shouldn't do it... if they do they gamble
