If you have a reasonable access level, you should be able to use per-directory .htaccess files to override the server settings.
I think if "AllowOverride Indexes" is set onthe server, then you can turn indexing off or on using Options -Indexes or Options +Indexes

i control my account via an FTP client...exclusively

its a google account so Im not sure you can use a .htaccess file

Most of the time thats what I do too...just uploading/synching content or setting up scripts...but somewhere, somehow there is more to your server settings than can be done with FTP....but if you are on a shared hosting plan, you'll probably never have to touch it..

just use a .htaccess file then. your on an apache server it should work.
