scoop:
i want to be able to link files out of a directory of mine
i don't want people to be able to erase the "/image.jpg" in the url bar and then go searching through my directory. is this possible?
- devaur0
basically you want a FTP interface on your website
- ewo0
well, i want to give people links to individual images out of this folder:
http://www.swifticus.com/bloggy/…
but i'd rather they couldn't scour the whole directory
- devaur0
just put a blank index.html file in the folder
- devaur0
this will keep them from seeing the directory. simple.
- devaur0
or am I still not understanding you?
- ewo0
you are genius. thank you.
- ewo0
i think there's a different way to do it, but that will work

here some more information.

Instead of a blank index file, you should normally just have 'Directory Indexing' turned off, whether in the server config file, or a .htaccess file in that directory, or in a control panel somewhere...
- ribit0
Its usually best to have Directory Indexing off globally, and only re-enable it for specific directories where you want people to browse.

i dont have a panel where i can turn it off...
what would that htaccess file look like and where would i put it?
- ribit0
If Directory Indexing is off, you put a .htaccess file in the directory you want browsable, with this in it:
Options +Indexes(This is for Linux..not sure about others)
- ewo0
where would i find the server config file?
- ribit0
depends... do you have root access, unmanaged or managed server.... etc?
- ewo0
i have no idea
