Just got back from my 6th visit to the Dealer in the past 2 months. I have a VW Jetta and it's definitely a "Monday Car". I have had nothing but problems w/ it since I purchased it.
Just wanted to pass it on incase anyone out there might be thinking of buying one.

I once owned an 88' Jetta. The absolute worst car I have ever owned. I didn't do my research before I purchased it. Later I looked it up and it was labeled as one of the top ten worst cars of 88'. Their reputation has improved since then but it sounds like you've gotten a lemon. You have my sympathy. Good luck.

what year jetta do you have? what engine?

I've got a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8t Wolfsburg... LOVE THE CAR!!! It's been no problem and it handles and drives better than anything else I've owned.
FYI- my brother and I drove a VW GTI across the country in 2002...

I like the look of jettas and passats bu have heard their reliability is down the toilet
- Clear0
it might depend on which engine you get in the VW. The 2.0 engine is made in Mexico... the 1.8t is made in Germany

I got a 1.8T last year, I've had numerous problems. I feel your pain. I think I've gotten throught the worst of it, they've replaced alot of the electrical issues in the engine, and the dealership is finally working with me. It's sucks, cause I dig the car when it runs correctly.

Yeah, I can relate. I really like the look and feel of the car when it's working well. It's a 2000 GLS.
I've also had numerous electrical problems. The ower of the dealership told me today that the Jetta is still primarily assembled in Mexico and that it's created a lot of problems.
I can't recall a time when I've gone to the dealership w/out there being some irate customer in the waiting room.
So what is everone doing? Did you buy/sell the car? If so, any recommendations?

2004.5 Jetta GLS 2.0...love it!
It aint that fast, but it is quick. And I have known Jettas with over 200k miles. If that isnt reliability, I dont know what is.

I have three VW's all has been reliable. there were some problems but nothing that wasn't fixed for free under the warranty. It depends on the dealership too. Some have competent mechanics and service managers, some have lazy ones. Some places will give you a loaner car when it is being serviced. One of the most common problems with these MarkIV VW's are window regulators when the window falls into the window. it happened to my Golf before work, I brought it to the dealer and they fixed it within an hour.

I think I just bought a lemon. I'm sure they're not all bad.

Anyone got a Mk 4 Golf 1.9 TDi - I'm thinking of getting one, opinions would be appreciated
- whatfont0
I've got the mark 4 1.8 GTI, excellent so far and the diesel 1.9TDi has much the same performance.

I used to have a VW Scirocco GTX, loved that car, but it was the least reliable item I ever owned. Was all worth it though.

TDI is awesome. a lot of torque and gets really good gas mileage, perfect for commuting and diesel is cheap compared to regular gas
- vwsung18t0
there's a place in Massachusetts that converts those TDI cars to run on grease. most restaurants give it out for free if you ask nicely for some. you don't lose performance and get as good gas mileage as diesel. the conversion costs $800

i have a 1988 Golf with over 250,000 miles on it and it still runs strong. No problems since I got it.

I knew a guy who had a grease conversion mercedes. Thing was great!
I have a 03 1.8t Gti only thing I've had so far is a leaky windsheild fluid resevoir. Such a fun car to drive.

According to most reports VW's are less reliable than D.Chrysler and Ford cars.
I have a 99 Jetta that has had the same electrical problems since the first 6 months I've owned it. It's had 5 recalls and the dealre still hasn't been able to fix it properly.
