Okay, we're looking to get a fileserver here where I work.
What charcteristics would you look for in a server these days?Back in the old days people would say RAID, but I frankly can't see the value in them
Dual Processor?
Storage type?and how to backup? old school was tape drive? are people still doing this?

i work at a game studio and we back up all our artists and programmers 3 times a week to tape. old school man, but it's the only thing the can hold it all and be consistent in keeping it somewhat reliable.

for backup:
- 7504130
1 tb (dont know teh make)
RAID (we do all our work online so we must have a really safe system)
Backup - we used to have tons of dats. Now we use mainly DVD.

The best system i ever used was OSX server with AIT back-ups.
Server never (and that's never) went down and the back up was as fast as flock.
If you can afford it get yourself a decent Xserve set up, you won't regret it.

For the server, if you can afford it, get an Xserve. Best file server on the planet. App servers, get an IBM or a Dell.
For back-ups, tape lasts long, and is very durable, more so than DVD, and hold more too. But dvd is still an excellent option.
