does anyone know a way to create the following effect using only the tools in flash?
i'd like to create a blurred text effect similar to the one that says "conscious choices" on this site: http://www.aveda.com
thanks in advance :)

the only way in flash to do it would be to use the:
modify>shape>soften fill edges.
your best bet is to bring in a transparent png

The png route would work just tween focused one to blured one.

Designerror - way to be a TOTAL ass. Nobody's allowed to ask questions here?
Leftwave, to get a true blur you'll need to use a png as dbloc suggested.
But you can actually get pretty nice results by creating 4 instances of a block of text, all layered on top of each other, and tweening each in a different direction (up, down, left, right) about 5 pixels as well as adjusting their alpha value from 0 to 100.
This will create a nice blur effect with a little practice (the lenght of the tween as well as the distance the blocks travel will greatly help or hurt the effect.
Not sure if I did a good job explaining the concept, but let me know if you need clarification.

JERKSTORE, unfortunately that takes a toll on the processor.
Designerror, we've been asking flash questions here forever. Nothing wrong with asking for advice or help. I mean, heaven forbid we be PRODUCTIVE here.

jerkstore.. everybody can ask anything about everything..
it's just when it's the same question being asked over and over again, i sometimes wonder why they even put the Find button in here!

designerror, who appointed you in charge of caring how many times a question is asked here? Not everyone is online 24 hours a day, as people log on at different times in different parts of the world. This is an open forumn for whoever wants to ask whatever questions they want and if you're going to be a dick, then just don't don't even repsond, because you're not being cool, by acting like you know flash well, because looking at your site, your skills blow.

i never said i was i charge of anything, or said i was grandmaster flash.
but it's an open forum and i can share my opinion about it right?
goodnight!

Fate, it's really not a processor hog, especially if you script the motion with code rather than timeline-based tweens.
Of course if you're dealing with older machines then that would definitely be a consideration :)

Ouch...
This thread is full of hate.I've tried something similar using PNGs and had difficulty on older Macs (PCs seemed to handle it better). Not really a PC plug (I use a mac personally), but something you might want to keep in consideration.
Using the soften edges control works well, but I've had trouble when applying it to a pixel based font (ie: MiniML).
So pick your poison. Sorry I don't have any other suggestions.

blurry png works fine.

a warm thank you to everyone for all of your helpful tips. i am going to give them a try now.
also, i'd like to point out that i did a search for help regarding this topic and found nothing, so i posted my question here. someone please correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the point of PVN to discuss design related issues such as different ways to create an effect in flash? i'm totally confused as to why i get yelled at, while 674 people can post messages under the title "girls" (including, but most definately not limited to porn, foursomes, and well hung guys) without a problem. anyone??
PS: leah, i have absolutely nothing against your thread. infact, it's completely amusing!

leftwave, not exactly what you want, but I made this fla a few years ago. It blurs between images. You can see how to get quite a convincing blur.
View it here:

http://www.frontmedia.co.uk/down…The design is shit obviously, as is the code I imagine (it is a few years old and I haven't looked at it for ages), but it gives you an idea anyway.

runDMB, thanks for the file! i'll give it a try.
designerror, i dismiss you from the corner of shame.
